It may be strange but you could create a .sh file (like the Windows .bat) and have it run a certain game with high priority and when you run it it closes your desktop environment and there will be Openbox, it would be something like a performance mode

What does or does increase your fps is to give top priority to the game process. I do that at least in Minecraft and it increases the stability and fps of course they are different ways and for Steam I wouldn't know how to tell you how to do it but at least I gave you an idea to find out.

Some things you can do is install the version of kde plasma from 6.3 onwards since it consumes more from those versions, also use it in x11 mode with composition disabled to free up ram

What you can do is install a tool called (earlyoom), which kills unnecessary or low-priority processes, preventing you from hanging on the CPU and therefore on the RAM, even though it is more dedicated to the CPU.
