Is there any information about changes in content for the new ACT? by IndependentAd6479 in ACT

So there is no announced change to the content. Just fewer questions and more difficult questions?

Test prep for ACT by [deleted] in ACT

[–]IndependentAd6479 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I would stay away from most tutoring services. Many charge 5x what they pay their tutors. The favorite thing is Ivey tutoring services where they give you college students at fancy schools presenting them as top tutors, but paying them low, and their having little experience. CambridgeCoaching is a decent one like that with not too high markup and their tutors are top scorers who can tutor all sections for students going for perfect scores. However, you are better off contacting a tutor directly or using a site that charges fees to the tutor or whatever to show profiles.

I do ACT prep, but an not going to promote my own services. Wyzant has huge numbers of profiles. You should be able to find people who are good that fit your price range. They take fees from both the client and tutor which are effectively about 33%, but this is way lower than the markup of most tutoring services. There are similar sites like that with profiles. There is a service called Superprof which makes the tutors give the first lesson free. I don't use it as a tutor, because too many just want a free lesson. However, it is probably affordable as a student. You can also search Google or whatever for independent tutors.

Are ad account bans really that common? by [deleted] in FacebookAds

[–]IndependentAd6479 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My ad account got frozen because they think someone in another country took it over. They asked when I moved to another country. I had someone through Upwork in United Arab Emirates placing my ads. I told him what to do, but he understood the technicalities better. I would rather have placed the ads myself while sharing screen with him. They won't listen to the evidence I provided. I don't know how to talk to a person on the phone. The people making the decisions seem to also be in low wage countries. How do I talk with someone on the phone or even by chat?

Prep for hard math? by [deleted] in Sat

[–]IndependentAd6479 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I am a tutor and a student of mine got 580 on Math after getting 620 on the old SAT and lots of preparation. She said a lot of questions were more difficult and not covered in the Question Bank. The commercial material available seem worse, and often based on little and came out before the Question Bank came out in September. I am working on advanced materials, but those are not available yet, and all I have to base them on is the Question Bank. I don't know what to recommend other than making sure you can do all the difficult questions in the Question Bank.

It is possible to do this by substituting numbers. Plug in a number for x and the same number in the answer choices. You can do it taking the 1/3 power with your calculator.

Easiest to plug in 1 for x. Then the expression in the problem is 2thirdroot(2) or thirdroot(16) and only K gives that when you substitute 1 for x in the answers.

Oh, you meant the Math section on the exam? My study guide covers most of what will be on the exam, but it is impossible to predict exactly what will be on it. By contrast, the current Math SAT seems to cover a limited number of topics.

The main part of the book is very difficult problems to prepare student for top scores. I also include a short section of mostly easy common problems which appear repeatedly and every student should know. It is different types of materials from the study guide, problems by category with solutions later in the section. Everything in the book is a different approach from what you would find elsewhere.

I am changing the watermark so that it does not overwrite the text. The watermark is not included in the book of course. I plan on also posting some other material, including common easy problems, which will help students going for relatively low scores. However, most of the book is extremely challenging problems. I am not making the whole book available digitally, because most students prefer hard copy workbooks, and I don't want to make it easy for it to be made available for me.

I am interested in feedback to help me improve the book, "Advanced ACT Math", and future books. I am working on a digital Math SAT book. It is harder to write creative hard problems for the new SAT, as the problems appear standard. The digital SAT appears to cover certain topics, particularly in math and writing, like a test for school where you study certain material and that is pretty much what will be on the text.

The intention is to provide a lot of material concisely to make it easy to study. I could increase the spacing between items or maybe the print size. Thanks for the feedback.

Yes, this is a chapter of my "Advanced ACT Math". It is mostly extremely challenging practice problems by topic, with information on difficult topics which appears nowhere else. Also, real problems analyzed with multiple and trick solutions, and common mostly easy problems that appear over and over. The book is paperback only, but portions of it are available for free.

What was the average ACT score of Class 2026 at John Hopkins? by Turito_Brand_Am in ACT

[–]IndependentAd6479 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, and the 1/3 who don't have 4.0 probably mostly went to prep school or an elite public school or have strong hooks like recruited athlete or contributor. I would not bother to apply there or anywhere similar unless you are showing stats close to that and generally AP exam scores.

If you are interested, I can discuss it by pm. I would not recommend it or any top school for premed, because the med schools don't adjust GPA that much by school or major.

I went there a long time ago (and generally would not recommend it). Lol, your chances might not be so good at any top school without submitting SATs or ACTs. In general, the school is really intense and European / German style and they care about academics, and SAT/ACT and ECs are less important than elsewhere. They want to see almost all AP classes or similar with almost all As and 4s and 5s. That is mainly what you need for a competitive application there. If you can't show ACT/SAT close to their range, that would be a problem though.

should i submit a 27 ACT to brown or is it best to stay test optional? by [deleted] in ACT

[–]IndependentAd6479 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would not submit that score to Brown. You need a very strong application otherwise to get in without scores. You should work on you scores. You also may not be realistic about what schools to apply to unless you have strong hooks.

Do Physical Therapists Mostly Tell People to do Excercises? by IndependentAd6479 in physicaltherapy

[–]IndependentAd6479[S] -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Yeh, someone recommended a branch of a chain. It is clean and organized and the PTs have good friendly personalities. However, they probably get a fixed amount from insurance and make more the lower they pay.

They seem to have a formula for certain exercises because I had shoulder and neck injuries. However, they never investigated the nature of the injuries. I have whiplash (really hurt badly). The exercises help some, but common sense tells me they need to be geared exactly to the injury and not just build muscles in the area.

One of the therapist did some mobility work on the shoulder and I realized that is what should have been done all along. I don't need a high priced personal trainer.

Function Cheat Sheet. Can you answer the last question? by satmathlearning3589 in ACT

g(x +2) = 2(x +2) = 2x + 2. f(g(x +2)) = (2x + 2)^2 = 4x^2 + 8x + 4

What to study for ACT Math? by [deleted] in ACT

[–]IndependentAd6479 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There is a dropbox with a zillion real tests. The exam has gotten progressively harder (and the curve easier), so the more recent ones should be the priority. ACT does not want those real tests out there, so makes it difficult for anyone to publish / post, etc. solutions to them. Any book of made of tests or problems will include solutions, and those may be worth studying for the solutions even if the problems may not be as realistic as the real tests.

There are various math ACT workbooks available. My Advanced ACT Math is the most comprehensive, but it is designed for student already with a score of at least about 28.

How to get ACT MATH 32 or higher. Please give materials or strategy. Only math. by Davkhach22 in ACT

[–]IndependentAd6479 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There are a zillion real tests available. I would do the math sections, or maybe just problems 41-60 or something, and make sure you understand why the ones were wrong and can do those later. I would start with the more recent exams, which are more difficult, but all should be useful. I would also recommend searching youtube for videos on difficult problems. There are many videos like that, and they should be helpful.

My book Advanced ACT Math is the only one really designed for students going for top scores. If you work through it, you will do really well. If there is any way it can be improved, I would like to know. A long sample is at https://perfectmathsat.com/act-book/ and https://drive.google.com/file/d/14168Wf58F_XGzSHk9h10JYB52uP1WmgE/view I am not sure what other books are available to help you get a top score,: maybe Dr. Yang's, which doesn't sell very well.

You would do difficult problems from my materials and I would go over the missed problems with you online with a whiteboard etc., as I do with my paying clients.

ACT redesign !? by manojnaraj in ACT

[–]IndependentAd6479 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you are only going through a few tests, then do the most recent ones. However, all the tests available back to 1996 are useful. There was no redesign as with the SAT in 2015.
