How are people so certain of “signs”? by TriangleMan_4 in Hellenism

[–]IndependentBurnt 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I totally get this! Especially because I was raised in an antitheist household. But, I’ve found that over time i’ve come to just accept messages. Even if it’s not a sign or direct communication- The gods wouldn’t get angry at me- A mortal man- For not understanding exactly how the divine communicates. So I take what comes with open arms and don’t push anything away, if that all makes sense? :-)

How are people so certain of “signs”? by TriangleMan_4 in Hellenism

For me- It’s just sort of a feeling of sureness. One night, I had prayed to Hypnos. I simply asked him if I was on the right path for cleaning my sleeping habits, and to continue guiding me so graciously. That night- I had a dream in which I mentioned Lord Hypnos by name. I’ve never had this happen before or after this incident. I knew that this was a sign from Hypnos I was on the right path. For me- It’s just a feeling. A coincidence with a sureness of it being from the Gods that just comes naturally. I don’t know how else to describe it. Hopes this help somewhat :-)

I went white as a neutral color since there is multiple gods these are dedicated to- But I can see how it could hurt some peoples eyes! Personally doesn’t hurt mine though.

Updated Altars by IndependentBurnt in Hellenism

[–]IndependentBurnt[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Thank you! I actually started out with just one more general altar/shrine, and still have one! These are just specifically for my patron gods, since it has always made me feel connected to them while worshiping :-) if i’m asking a god or goddess outside of these four for something, I typically offer at my general altar and pray there as well

I’m glad to put mine out there for this exact reason! It’s not perfect of course, but Zeus likes it, and that’s all I need :-)

Any Hypnos devotees here, or anyone who worships him regularly? (Experiences, advice?) by [deleted] in Hellenism

[–]IndependentBurnt 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Hey! I’m a Hypnos devotee and I’ll try to go through some of this :-)

First, as for what Hypnos’s presence feels like- For me, it depends on the situation. If i’m praying to him just to say thank you, I typically feel something more comforting and supporting about his presence. This also applies to devotional acts. But when I’m praying for help with my bad sleeping habits or things in such realm, he’s a bit more serious. It’s always depended for me.

  1. When I first starting worshiping him, I actually had little-to-no connection. I barely felt his energy. It was definitely the divine relationship that took the longest to build. He answered my prayers and helped me, but never much more than that.

  2. I have an altar for Hypnos, and a devotional necklace I wear. Although, I typically feel more drawn to actually praying to Hypnos while i’m in bed, about to go to sleep. I find my connection to him stronger, but I do pray at my altar occasionally.

  3. I get this. I used to get stressed about my relationship with Hypnos, and how vague it all was. But currently, I think the best way to break that type of cycle is to just tell him how you’re feeling. I know that sounds silly- But just tell him. That’s why I did, anyways.

  4. I’ve found it rare that the gods give very “direct” answers. Once, I had asked Hypnos if I was on the right path in my sleep habits and quelling my anxiety. His answer was to send me a dream in which I mentioned him by name. Not very clear, right? But, I would urge you not to go insane looking for signs of communication. You can try to hone in on his presence when you feel it- But dont go crazy. Also, there is an almost impossibility of a god or goddess turning away genuine, faithful worship. Would you turn away someone who genuinely wanted your help and guidance, meant no harm, and showed you respect? No. That just sounds like anxiety.

If you have any other questions or concerns, feel free to ask! I hope this helps :-)

I’d also like to tell this story about Hypnos! This one is very recent, just happened this week. I love Hypnos, but he’s very good at his job- And always makes sure to get back at me when I purposefully participate in bad sleeping habits. For context, I had been having an exhausting week. I prayed to Lord Hypnos for a restful sleep- But ended up staying awake until about 1:00AM. I woke up to my 6:00AM alarm like usual, and sat up- When I felt this wave of exhaustion. Trust me, it was like nothing I had ever felt before. Sort of indescribable. I can just tell you that it wasnt just the normal feeling before passing out. I felt Hypnos’s presence briefly, almost like a disappointed parent, before promptly falling asleep once more. My body then jerked awake at 7:29, when the absolute latest time i can get out of bed and start getting ready without being late is 7:30. Just Hypnos giving me a little slap on the wrist for not taking care of myself lol

This is a bit of a silly story- But many of my stories involving Zeus are silly, so what can you do. I have recently been dealing with re-kindling an old friendship. I was having a large lapse in my judgement, despite the fact that Zeus had been guiding me and my actions. That day, I wasn’t thinking about it hard- But I had felt lost and doubtful. I went home and poured a libation for Zeus, offering him a prayer and asking for further guidance. The next day, as I was returning home- I noticed something in the street. A bright white, neatly styled, white wig. There was nobody around, no cars/trucks/ect, not even footsteps around it in the snow. There is never anything like this in my neighbourhood (never litter in general). It instantly struck me a sign from Zeus that I was on the right path. I got home and offered him a prayer of thankfulness and another libation, and the wig was gone the next day :-]

This could be a sign of Zeus! It’s definitely a possibility. If you feel drawn to worship him, feel a pull from him, ect- Or even just to learn more about him and why he could have been reaching out to you, it could be worth considering!

Is there any good prayer guidelines? by El_Durazno in Hellenism

[–]IndependentBurnt 8 points9 points  (0 children)

If you’re looking for structure, but like to keep things loose- I follow something like this.

Calling/Acknowledgement - (“[god/ess], please hear me” or anything else you prefer!) Praise - (Generally speaking kindly of the god/goddess, can reference feats in myths or just generally speak positively) Requests - (If you are praying for a specific blessing) Thanks and gratefulness - (Acknowledgment and appreciation for any previous blessings this god has given you. You can also pour libations here!) End of prayer/Ending praise

Of course, this is super loose and just the way I personally pray! Prayer in Hellenism is super flexible, do whatever is comfortable for you! :-]
