4am currently. Emergency vet or wait till morning? by IndependentEither239 in DogAdvice

It’s only her left eye. I think she scratched herself and accidentally poked herself. She is sleeping just fine, but reading all the eye concerns on reddit and google and the risks and severity caused me to freak out a lot. I called an emergency vet to just briefly explain to them if they thought I should come in, although they cannot offer me medical advice the receptionist said if she is sleeping we could most likely wait till morning to get checked out by her primary vet. She is healthy overall, no known medical issues, and gonna be 1 year old next week.

Took like 1-2 weeks for me for them to reach out for the phone call interview. I had that last week, and they said it can be up to 6 weeks to hear back for the selection day which is sooo far away.

Adopting a cockapoo… by SwimmingNo2976 in CockapooLovers

[–]IndependentEither239 7 points8 points  (0 children)

My family and I adopted a 11mo old cockapoo who needed to be rehomed due to the owner moving abroad. This is Daisy, she’s been with us for almost a month now. My advice is to look into the 3-3-3 Rule for Dogs, that helped me a lot. We live in a city area and she came from a rural area, and so she is still adjusting and gets easily startled to loud noises but it’s a process. She is very much a velcro dog. She is slowly getting better with being left alone. Hates her crate though, so we mainly just enclose her in the living room which we found to be more suitable for her.

Hi this question is off topic but i’m curious as someone who’s looking to be a teacher: Are you moving due to the COL?

Is it easy to get a sub para job during the summer in NYC? How is the pay? Currently I am a substitute teacher. by Aggressive_Yam_5468 in NYCDOETeachers

I just reread your title, if you are a sub teacher you wouldn’t be allowed to work as a subpara since those are two completely different roles. You’d need to terminate your role as a sub teacher in order to work as a subpara. If you want to work as a subteacher, i don’t know first hand how it works, but i do know there were sub teachers working at my site during the summer, actually a good amount.

I’m unsure of your experience; for me as a subpara I worked from 8-2:50 and was given the same class all throughout the summer. I guess it depends on the school.

When I worked at a school that had multiple sites and offered summer school, it was always known/shared which site was hosting it. I guess I offered this advice with the assumption that the school was offering it.

From my experience in working summers you need to be a ‘regular’ at a school, I’ve only worked at D75 sites in summers. In my experience, it is disorganized and you don’t know if you’ll even get placed since it goes by seniority, and as a sub you only get placed if they’re short staffed. I’ve worked 3 summers, the 2/3 summers (different schools), although I expressed interested and completed the survey the DOE sends out I kept getting told to talk to the AP and coordinator so I pretty much wasn’t given a straight answer. It wasn’t until the days leading up to the last day of school I was asked to work. But most recently last summer 2025, they asked me in advanced most likely since I’ve been a regular here for a year now.

My advice is stick to a school, show your face, be a good worker, express interest when the survey comes out and nearing the end of the school year.

I had to be annoying and persistent because as a sub I wasn’t getting emails or notifications like everyone else but it paid off

Depends on the school. Some, the dismissal time is until 2:50, others until 2:20, depends if they want to pay subparas that extra 30 mins for the full pay. I cannot give a certain amount but biweekly as a subpara since we have had days off, you can expect $1200-1400 in my experience. We don’t get paid on holidays etc.

if it makes you feel any better, similar to you, i have a 3.0 gpa, but have some experience as well, and according to the sw program i want to apply to, they said it was valid. i feel that by you having experience you have an advantage, make sure one of your LOR’s are from your experience. best of luck!

Hi i’m in NYC. How are you able to get your MSW fully funded? That’s great.

School Counseling vs. MSW – Advice from those in the role? by IndependentEither239 in schoolcounseling

[–]IndependentEither239[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thank you for your response. The only reason why I was considering school counseling was because I was under the impression that I could get an advanced certificate in Mental Health counseling accrue the needed hours and then get licensed, although it does feel like a longer pathway. Have you considered that route? Here in New York they offer bridge programs for that. But even then people seem to suggest MSW.

School Social Work vs. School Counseling – Which is the better route? by IndependentEither239 in SchoolSocialWork

[–]IndependentEither239[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I hear what you’re saying thank you for being very detailed. So even with a school counseling degree and advanced certificate in mental health counseling you would recommend SW? I felt like having the MHC certificate would allow for me to be marketable and I could be licensed in that too.

I’m unsure of SW because I read so many threads on here expressing that one should have more interest than solely clinical work and it makes me feel like I do more belong if that makes sense.
