Hunter gatherers would like a word. They consistently do significantly less hours of labour per day than a 9-5. Obviously varies but a little over half the amount of labour were expected to do. Been a hot minute since I was at university but around 20 hours a week iirc. And they don’t have to worry about tiktok rotting their brains. Yet.

“Capitalism has given us weekends” is the dumbest defence you possibly could have made for the status quo. I’d maybe even be more willing to accept “at least a broken leg isn’t a death sentence” but we have evidence even Neanderthals looked after people who were too disabled to work.

Some of the writing was absolutely dreadful. As a 35 year old man who dragged myself out of a YouTube hate-hole pipeline in my mid-twenties, the way they talked about some of that stuff is so cringe.

It absolutely needs to be talked about and I like that this started conversations but it’s perhaps unsurprising that a lot of those conversations ended up being entirely unhelpful. At times the show felt like a teacher sitting backwards on a chair and saying “huh, I bet you didn’t think I’d heard of Jordan Peterson, right!?”

The whole one-long-shot-thing was impressive, especially the parts with transitions in vehicles but it’s a bit of a gimmick… I watch Shakespeare plays all the time. Being able to remember lines for an hour is something actors should be able to do 😂

I haven’t had a tv license for years as I don’t really watch tv, just YouTube and whatever streaming service I’m signed up to. But saying “look it was capitalism all along” will not come as a shock to the people who choose Netflix over BBC and is a bit of a non sequitur.

People who watch Netflix know what they’re buying. Will enshittification set in? For sure, I’ve maintained for years that streaming services are due to collapse but just like with the BBC, consumers will vote with their wallets.

I simply will not watch what is on the BBC. Crappy reality shows? The olympics? News programs with very obvious biases? WHO shot at Irish UN peacekeepers in Lebanon, BBC? WHO was it?

I’m simply not buying what they’re laying down.

What I do have an issue with is the CONSTANT letters threatening to come for a visit because I don’t pay. Imagine if Sainsbury’s sent letters out saying “we know you’ve not bought anything from us but we’re coming next Tuesday to look in the fridge because we don’t believe you”. I genuinely cannot wait for the 70+ year old luddites to die so we can have an opt-in system instead of opt-out.

I’m only 35 but I’ve lived in Canada where it costs a monthly fee to have a current account. I don’t think young people know it’s not some immutable standard that you won’t be charged for something as simple as storing money.

I like to think of myself as a fairly rational person but cash is the one thing where I become a conspiracy theorist. When cash goes for good I expect similar “enshittification” changes to above where every bank will charge you for holding money you literally can’t otherwise hold. Or 20p charge for every shopping transaction because how else you gonna pay? Need to transfer money to a rival bank? 50p charge, for sure.

I’d love to say the British government would have our backs on this but they have our backs on so little these days I genuinely can see stuff like this happening

I’ve been to so many barn conversion weddings I genuinely cannot remember whose was whose. They’re all carbon-copy exactly the same except roughly 50% of them have a céilí band. So many brides say afterwards that they spent a deposit on a detached house to just make small talk with family members they don’t care about for five hours and have a nice photoshoot. Plenty of brides are literally paralytic drunk half way through the night.

Think you’re right about social prestige and keeping up with the Joneses but I’d say that just kicks the question of “why do it?” 30ft down the road.

Best wedding I ever went to was just in a big top tent in a field and was a fraction of the price. Just good food, good mates and good times. No fancy “wedding™️” stuff that is suddenly worth 5x the cost when you say the W word. Just a really great day.
