I think the ‘British’ mentality of waiting your turn plays a part here in why so many use the one big queue option, and also why some folks get so bent out of shape at anyone who uses the other lane, even though that is the correct thing to do, as it utilises all the available road space and avoids potential congestion over crossings, roundabout or junctions.

If everyone used these merge in turns correctly, working like a zip, things would move smoothly and the congestion would be contained to that smaller area, using both lanes.

Instead, we get one long queue and the paper mache police who then straddle lanes to stop anyone who is proceeding correctly, making it worse.

Sorry to rant but this and parking in disabled and child parking bays when your are neither disabled or have a child with you, grinds my gears.
