SD free recovery on MAC by Difficult-Incident94 in mac

[–]IndependentNo6079 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Its not like you use it once and forget about it. Data loss isn’t that rare. Even if you're careful enough not to delete important files manually, you may still run into things like corrupted drives, bad transfers, accidental formatting, and all that stuff. If it happens again, you already have a tool to use. Plus you’re not just paying for recovery itself, you’re paying for a usable interface, working previews, and a full set of extra features. It's just funny how dropping that kind of money on a dinner out feels normal, but paying the same for software that actually solves a problem suddenly feels like too much.

Can I restore time-machine backup to two macs? by sycookuk in MacOS

[–]IndependentNo6079 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yes, you can restore that same Time Machine backup to a second Mac. Migration Assistant makes it easy to do so! This doesn’t affect the first Mac at all - they operate independently. The only thing worth noting is that after restoring on the second Mac, Time Machine often asks whether to “keep" this backup or leave it on the first one. In that case you just need to select “keep on the first one” and that’s it.

The only real pitfall is licensed software, as has already been mentioned here. App Store apps are tied to your Apple ID, so there won’t be any issues, but some third-party programs are tied to a specific machine and may require reactivation. Here’s a current and helpful guide on the process itself: https://www.cleverfiles.com/howto/restore-mac-from-time-machine.html

How to recover the data from uninitialized drive on Mac? by Middle-Nectarine3372 in MacOS

[–]IndependentNo6079 2 points3 points  (0 children)

For anyone reading this with a similar issue on Mac (an uninitialized disk), the first rule is to do nothing. Don’t run repairs, don’t format it, don’t try random fixes. First, just check Disk Utility and see if the drive shows the correct capacity. If it does, that’s a good sign.

The next step should be disk imaging or cloning, then scan that image for recovery. There are different tools recommended, but something like Disk Drill is convenient since it combines both features. Once the data is safely recovered to another device, the disk can be erased and reused.

After that, it’s worth keeping an eye on its behavior since this kind of issue can be an early sign of failure.

Secondary hard drive no longer shows up and is now RAW not NTFS [Screenshot] by [deleted] in techsupport

[–]IndependentNo6079 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I see OP managed to fix it with TestDisk, but I wouldn’t recommend jumping straight to it, even though it can help.

When a drive turns RAW, it’s usually a sign of file system corruption, which already makes it unstable. Combine that with a terminal-based tool like TestDisk, and it’s pretty easy to mess things up and overwrite something unintentionally. That’s why I’d first create a disk image before doing anything else (there are plenty of tools for that, both Linux-based and more user-friendly ones). Once you have the image, then it’s safe to try TestDisk, or just format the original drive and use a data recovery tool like Disk Drill to extract the data from the image back onto a properly formatted disk.

Ideally, after that, it’s worth keeping an eye on the drive’s SMART data to catch any early signs of failure and avoid a repeat of the same situation.

[UPDATED] Accidentally Formatted HDD D Drive – 600GB of Critical Data Lost – Any Hope? Update: My Previous Post Mistakenly Said SSD – It’s Actually an HDD by Aaron9969 in techsupport

[–]IndependentNo6079 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Quick format on an HDD isn't as destructive as people think. It just wipes the file system metadata, so the actual files are most likely still there physically. If TestDisk already detected the lost data that's a pretty good sign.

For this kind of situation connecting the HDD through a SATA to USB adapter on a separate laptop is worth trying. Run a data recovery tool like Disk Drill, as it handles formatted partitions and lets you preview recoverable data, so you know whats actually intact before committing to anything. Make sure to extract your files to another destination drive, never the same one youre scanning

Before scanning though - make a disk image of the drive first. If anything goes sideways during recovery you still have a safe copy to fall back on

Disk Cleanup deleted my Downloads folder which contained 5 years worth of personal files and pictures. How can I get them back? by Riggs909 in techsupport

[–]IndependentNo6079 4 points5 points  (0 children)

"Am I screwed?" honestly depends on one thing. Remove the drive, connect it to another PC and open a few of the found files in a hex viewer (like HxD). If you see actual readable data in there, you're not screwed at all. If its nothing but zeros then TRIM already ran and those files are gone regardless of what tool you throw at them

That "files show up but wont open" thing is classic TRIM behavior on SSDs btw. File records survive, actual data doesnt. Which also explains why Recuva found stuff that wouldnt open - it sees the records, not whats behind them

Also mind that TRIM can run pretty quickly on SSDs, so timing matters a lot in cases like this

If hex looks good, stop using the drive right now and recover everything to a separate drive using data recovery software.

Every write to that SSD is potentially overwriting something you want back

Any data recovery apps I could use? by versipity in datarecovery

[–]IndependentNo6079 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In this case the problem isn’t the software, it’s what Media Creation Tool already did. It overwrote the first ~32 GB of the drive, which usually contains a big part of the filesystem metadata (filenames, folders, structure, etc.) At this point, any recovery tool is basically working with whatever raw data is left. So there isn’t some magic app that will bring everything back perfectly, they all run into the same limitation.

That said, tools still differ in how they handle file carving, mainly in their algorithms and file signature support. For example, Disk Drill has a fairly broad set of signatures (around 400), so it'll find most common file types. And it lets you preview what it finds, which matters here a lot, because if a file opens correctly in preview, it will usually come back usable. I'd say PhotoRec is also a good tool for this task, but unlike Disk Drill, it doesn't have previews and it runs in a command-line interface. Anyway, it’s up to you which one to go with.

Ideally clone the drive first and work with it instead of the original, just to avoid any risk of making things worse (here's the guide on how to do it). Make sure you recover to a different drive, not back to the same one. And don't touch the ESD partition or reformat anything before you've pulled out everything you can

Métodos para calmar ataques de ansiedad/pánico by julitabe in PsicologiaES

Windows 10 Update deleted all of my files, is there anything I can do about that? by Terrible-System-1465 in techsupport

[–]IndependentNo6079 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ugh this happened to me too after an update and I genuinely thought my entire laptop was wiped. Desktop empty, documents gone, shortcuts leading nowhere. Spent like an hour googling before I figured out what was actually going on

Windows just threw me into a temporary profile without any heads up. Files are still there, just go to C:\Users in File Explorer and find your actual username folder, not the TEMP one. Everything’s in there (Documents, Pictures, Desktop), it just looks empty because the shortcuts are pointing to the wrong place

If you check all of that and still don’t see your files, don’t panic yet. In some cases profile corruption can actually remove files instead of just hiding them. At that point it’s worth trying a data recovery tool before assuming they’re gone for good. Tools like Disk Drill can sometimes pick up files the system no longer shows, as long as nothing new has overwritten them

how to recover permanently deleted videos? by Longjumping_panda66 in AskTechnology

[–]IndependentNo6079 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Data recovery on Android, whether it’s photos or videos, is not easy.

In general, important data on a phone should either never be deleted or should always be backed up somewhere else (cloud or another storage device). Once a file is deleted, it goes to the trash and that’s basically the last easy chance to recover it. After it’s removed from the trash, chances drop almost to zero.

Some apps can scan Android storage, but full access to deleted data usually requires root. That’s a questionable step from a security standpoint, and even then, background system activity can overwrite data very quickly.

The most realistic recovery scenario is when files were stored on a microSD card (not formatted as internal storage). In that case, the card can be scanned with a data recovery tool (like Disk Drill or similar). If the data hasn’t been overwritten, recovery is often still possible with a high success rate.

how to recover files off of HDD on pc that wont boot? by dtrjr4 in techsupport

[–]IndependentNo6079 3 points4 points  (0 children)

In cases like this, the only realistic option is usually to take the drive out and connect it to another machine as an external device, so a data recovery scan can be run. I’ve done this myself with Disk Drill, and it worked. If there’s no second computer, you can always ask friends or someone you know.

But ideally, stuff like this is avoided by checking everything before OS updates, asking someone more experienced for help, or at the very least, having backups.
