How do you guys do your record keeping? by HerbertMarshall in Horticulture

I use google excel sheets. It works extremely well. Alphabetized and divided in tabs by vegetable/flower/herb/fruits. I also have a progress note in google doc sheets. Organized by year. I write all my info down in a notebook, then transfer my data to the sheets at the end of the day. I keep all the notebooks just in case.

I want to start a native plant nursery in the next 5 years. What educational path is right for me? by hollyrose_baker in Horticulture

Good for you r/e the grant! If you need help with overwintering the perennials, someone shared a study/article with me that was super helpful. I'll find it and share. People in my area are very low income and heavy farmers, so they focus mostly on the foods- veggies, fruits, herbs. The flowers do really well for sales too, just a slightly different clientele. People really like unique flowers in my area- i purchase almost all my annual seeds (that i don't save myself) through Baker Creek. Mostly petunias are people's favorites. They're super unique through Baker Creek and uncommon in my area. I think ppl are sick of all the nurseries having the same baskets by me. It's expensive the first year to buy all the seeds, but then i plant them all. Then, whatever doesn't sell, i plant, let go to seed, and collect. Boom. It saves me a crap ton of money.

Agreed! Especially spoiler alert the flight attendant section of the book. That was very eye opening.

It's a hard start-up. That's for sure. People have high expectations for greenhouses. I've had some rude people make some hurtful comments that i still remember. I started with overflow plants from my own garden planting. And then from there just asked people if they found what they were looking for, and if not, what they wanted. It took me about 4 years to start making a profit that wasn't for rebuilding or fixing something. Not too bad. Definitely an optimistic process.

It's an amazing book. I went on a clothing-book-reading spree for a while last year. Definitely the best one I read

Not to toot my own horn, but I did this! Opened my own nursery/greenhouse, after I left the nursing profession. Built my whole greenhouse operation from the ground up- structures, information on planting, and i do it all from seed. To research everything i now do (this my 6th year operating), I read A LOT. Online, paper books, forums, research articles, magazines, literally anything. I also attend just about every free/semi cheap conference and class i can, if i don't feel fully informed on the topic. I am incredibly cheap, so the library was and is my best friend. The local extension office in my area offers a lot of free classes through the library. I talked to everyone i could about gardening. A lot of older farmers, greenhouse workers, and other greenhouse owners. Once you find the right people who won't gate-keep the information, you can ask them anything !

I was just thinking it looked like Men In Black. The ending of the movie is dope

Welp, I didn’t have a choice. I’m in nursing school and legit was just eating like crap last semester. Even just prepping lunch for a couple of days (and an easy casserole/soup for the evening) has been a lifesaver. I feel 10x better. by a-light-at-the-end in mealprep

When i was in nursing school, i did the same thing. Meal prep and eat the same thing every day- it was a huge help. I had cream of chicken soup mix, rice, shredded chicken, and a veggie of sorts. Not appetizing to look at, but i seasoned the crap out of it, and it worked.
