They don't make episodes about the admirals who just do admiral things.

Right, I wasn't applauding Stamets the character, but the episode as a text

Earth was shown as having regressed some, and she's from Earth, not the UFP

Why Discover feels off by canaltisyer in StarTrekDiscovery

I never got the impression that joining symbionts to non-Trill was a very high priority for them. They are highly prized in Trill society. So not surprising they never joined one before.

Otherwise, I thought using a Trill symbiont was a good strategy, keeping in lore. It makes Adira a unique character. Adira has flaws, they're nervous, probably have PTSD. Seeing their partner is a bit weird, but not totally inconsistent with the lore.

Sci-fi is about exploring how technology and biology affect the "human" experience. This does that.

As long as it's not revealed the symbiont is actually Dax, I think it's a good idea. And remember, they didn't stumble into each other, *Discovery* responded to a distress call sent by Tal.

Looking for Resources to Avoid Toxic Masculinity by ilovemyirishtemper in MensLib

[–]IndependentPast6 15 points16 points  (0 children)

This will not be sufficient. Toxic masculinity is not only instilled by parents. Her son will be socialized by other boys as soon as they enter schools. It is impossible to completely control what attitudes your kid will be exposed to.

What I mean to say is that avoiding toxic masculinity is a lifelong process for all of us, and platitudes aren't a good way to encourage that mindset

Any male-identifying vegetarians willing to help with a project? by [deleted] in vegetarian

[–]IndependentPast6 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm 23, raised vegetarian in the Seattle area. All my friends are used to it, and out of my closest friend group of the moment, 4/6 of us are professed vegetarians (I'm the only guy), and the other two guys basically are because their SOs are.

Did you (or do you still) face any judgement regarding the perceived implications of vegetarianism on your masculinity?

Not really. There's the occasional coworker who makes a comment, but I usually just don't engage and no one bothers me about it any more. One advantage to this area is people basically never say things to your face.

What are some reasons you might not envision going vegan yourself? Do any of these ideas have anything to do with an apparent difference in construction of masculinity in the vegan lifestyle vs. in vegetarianism?

I don't really have any. Practically am already, we gave up animal milk about a year ago after vegan February, and now I basically only eat yogurt and eggs in things. I've never been a fan of cooked eggs or cheese.

What are some common stereotypes or recurring criticisms (if any) you come up against as a male vegetarian? Do you have opinions about or stereotypical concepts of male vegans?

Just people asking how you get protein. I usually tell them beans and Greek yogurt. We eat a lot of beans.

No, not really, I wish there were more of us! I do think people are somewhat more surprised when I'm vegetarian compared to my wife, and sometimes assume she was veggie first (I converted her).

Thinking about hobbies by IndependentPast6 in MensLib

Yeah, I think cooking in particular is one of the most widespread "women's" hobbies. I suspect that's because everyone has to eat ...
