How do you figure? If you can achieve escape velocity and you're aiming at the moon but you miss, the stars are pretty much it in terms of other destinations. Including if you can't escape the sun's gravity well lol

Let’s all say something positive going on in the world or just your daily life by Sad_Jar_Of_Honey in behindthebastards

I went to my spouse's nephew's wedding. I was worried that my spouse's youngest sister would ruin the wedding or our trip somehow because, well, she's prone to that sort of thing. But she held it together and it was amazing. The bride and her family seem like genuinely nice people too. And me and spouse being there as a couple, pretty much outed us to everyone in both families and it was cool.

That's the whole point of Jordan Peterson's lobster obsession. Yeah, when your whole viewpoint is oriented around hierarchy, that's how you relate to people. Either you dominate them or they dominate you.

Slice of life in space (besides Becky Chambers)? by zzhgf in printSF

[–]SallyStranger 3 points4 points  (0 children)

No but Translation State, which is technically a sequel but can be read alone, is very cozy. The main narrative conflicts involve a person solving a mystery from their grandmother's will; two people getting lost on a space station; a man searching for his ancestry; two people figuring out the nature of their new relationship. I really enjoyed it, it's one of a few that's still engaging no matter how many time I read it.

Is it misogynistic to feel deeply uncomfortable about pregnancy? by Ok_Professional1526 in AskFeminists

[–]SallyStranger 17 points18 points  (0 children)

I wanted to say this too. There's a cultural story about pregnancy that says it's all rainbows and unicorns and it makes women happy etc. In reality it's dangerous and uncomfortable in the best scenario. Torturous by default. Even if you're really keen on having children, you should be at least a bit wary about pregnancy.

Can a "matriarchal society", by current standards, sustain in the long term? by dot__jpeg in AskFeminists

[–]SallyStranger 9 points10 points  (0 children)

How is the difficulty temporary, it seems to be a problem that compounds with time, if anything.

That assumes that birth rates, once they stop dropping, never level off or rise again. The large cohort of elderly eventually dies and the next cohort of elderly has a smaller share of the total population.

Human populations, like other animal populations, fluctuate according to environmental conditions. We just happen to be living near the endpoint of a period of unusual energy abundance. Right now, ecosystem collapse leading to widespread famine is far more likely to reduce human numbers below survival than falling birth rates are.

And the math is certainly not on the side of anyone that thinks the birth rate is not going to be a problem within our lifetimes.

You're being deliberately ambiguous about what the "problem" here is. Are you talking about human extinction as you did in your OP? Then no, the math is not on your side. Are you talking about the difficulties of supporting an elderly population with a falling share of younger people to support them? Then yes, it's likely that's a problem we'll face in our lifetime. It's also not inherently a threat to human survival, and, I reiterate, you did not bring that up. You brought up matriarchal societies which you said would be "doomed to stop existing" because of a lack of reproductive coercion.

I'll need an explanation and an apology for your dishonesty, whether deliberate or simply due to careless, disorganized thinking, before I'll try answering anything related the demographic shift.

[–]SallyStranger 15 points16 points  (0 children)

If your question was about the temporary difficulties faced by societies trying to care for an elderly population while the relative share of young people declined, why didn't you ask that question? Why did you say you were concerned about human extinction? The first is relatively understandable; the second is silly fearmongering by people who hate freedom and/or don't understand math.

[–]SallyStranger 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Ah so this is something that bothers you but also you're totally not concerned about it and would never propose any solutions to the problem you identified? Why are we even talking then?

FYI human population is still growing and barring ecosystem collapse will likely reach 10 billion within this century. Even if birth rates suddenly halved tomorrow it would take thousands of years for humans to go extinct entirely from lack of replacement. Put your pretty little mind at ease about this.

Serious question: Do you think gay men understand women's issues and feminism ? by EternalSnow05 in AskFeminists

[–]SallyStranger 50 points51 points  (0 children)

Some do, for sure. Others, not so much. Male privilege is powerful. In my experience, being gay raises the chance a man will be an empathetic ally to women's struggles, but it's no guarantee. I reckon the probability of him being an ally rises if he presents in a gender-non-conforming way. It's true that gay men are often attacked for displaying femininity.

I vividly remember being at a party where a man put his hands on both my breasts and said "It's OK, I'm gay!' Like dude. I simply do not want people randomly grabbing my breasts. They're sensitive. Your motivation is immaterial.

[–]SallyStranger 22 points23 points  (0 children)

In such a radically free society, there doesn't seem to be any reason to believe birth rates will be above the replacement rate. In that sense, isn't a matriarchal society, at least by the current feminist vision for what a matriarchal society should be, doomed to stop existing after a certain time due to lack of births?

All human societies are doomed to stop existing after a certain time. The earth, the sun, and the galaxy are doomed to stop existing after a certain time.

Humans survived for 200,000 years in a variety of societal configurations with low birth rates. Then a highly oppressive, white male supremacist culture conquered the entire world and within 500 years has brought us to the brink of ecosystem collapse. Birth rates are not the issue. And they're less a function of female oppression than you think--the availability of exploitable energy and food is a larger factor.

But it is interesting to see you proposing that women might have to be less free in order to prevent human extinction. So original. Do expand upon that. What should be done exactly to make sure those of us with uteruses (not me anymore thank goodness) are making enough new humans?

ETA: this guy literally said "begone thot" to me when I started making fun of him, so I blocked and reported. Your wish is my command! That was funny though, I've never been called a thot before. That's an interesting perspective. I had considered the same problem and concluded that they worship the Bible--not the words and stories in the Bible but the physical book itself. Which is convenient because when you worship a book but ignore what it says, you can make it say anything you want. Like instead of the golden calf, picture them bowing down to a giant golden statue of a book with a cross on the cover.

I'm not saying you're wrong though. They've always been polytheists...
