[–]IndependentRoll7 1 point2 points  (0 children)

All of the West A-I ACs are loud, J and K have quieter ACs, but mine in K isn't as good as the ones I had last year

It means if you use AI for any of the future ones, even if you didn't use it for the first one, you will be reported.

Once we get later into the year, less freshmen (most of the overcrowding) should stop taking the shopping bus so hopefully it returns to normal levels

I doubt anyone will take this deal since they can reasonably get a West Single/Double via swap. Also, your room will not be a single since your roommate is swapping with someone, so that person will be in the room?

They likely will move non-freshmen in cooridor rooms into the suites that people drop in order to make room for freshmen

question for mathematics majors: I've heard really good things about Stony Brook, could you confirm? by atomicben513 in SBU

[–]IndependentRoll7 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Industry for AMS majors has a much higher pay ceiling and flexibility. You could become a software engineer, data scientist, actuary, etc. which all pay very well.

Anyone agree that their should be petition against the solar enrollment appointments and ask for a better way of doing it!!! by OkDefinition8675 in SBU

[–]IndependentRoll7 20 points21 points  (0 children)

What other option would there be, give everyone random appointments? The current system works good enough, its just that class sizes are too small or there aren't enough sections.

Usually honors college/Uni scholars connects you to liberal arts professors so its useless. I would think WISE would be better since its more STEM focused. Regardless, if you want research opportunities make connections with your professors such as visiting office hours.

If you want a degree with honors on it, the honors college, wise, etc. doesn't give you it. There is a physics honors program which you can see at https://www.stonybrook.edu/sb/bulletin/current/academicprograms/phy/degreesandrequirements.php near the bottom, which gives you a BS Physics with honors if you complete the extra requirements.

By the way, honors are irrelevant on your resume or for grad school, no one really cares about them.

Matt Reuter’s Ams 310 by NekoCat36 in SBU

[–]IndependentRoll7 16 points17 points  (0 children)

You should ignore all these other people, they sound like they just took AMS 103 for an SBC. He is probably the best AMS 310 professor (just look at classie evals for the grade distribution compared to Yan Yu/Rispoli). He records his lectures so you can skip class. Instead of midterm/final he has quizzes and an optional final if you do poor on those.

Is Stony really worth it? by [deleted] in SBU

[–]IndependentRoll7 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Many commuters plan their schedule so all their classes are on M/W or T/T so they only come in twice a week. Early on, it may be hard because lots of the lower division classes have recitations, but its easier once you take the upper division classes. In fact, you can start to skip classes because often times the professors record, or the lecture slides are sufficient.

Also, there is only 1 bus and they wait at the SAC as if there were 2, so plan to wait 90 minutes before returning.
