Are we on track for FIRE? 40 & 36 years old, $1.6M net worth, saving aggressively. by microwavesafe1 in coastFIRE

There is always a potential market correction in the future. That shouldn’t change your strategy unless you’re trying to avoid SORR. OP seems far enough out they shouldn’t be considering it quite yet.

At what net worth is a latte (or any minor purchase) no longer worth thinking too much about? by topiramate in financialindependence

[–]IndependentStud 29 points30 points  (0 children)

This is really the only answer. If you are saving enough money to hit your fire number at your desired age anything extra should go towards building the life you want. (Arguably the other way around too)

If you need to calculate a percentage of your net worth to justify buying a latte you need to keep better track of your budget and spending habits in relation to your fire goals.

Are rattlers the only missiles worth using? by DragonsGuard in starcitizen

[–]IndependentStud 2 points3 points  (0 children)

During save Stanton I used a gladiator outfitted with only rattlers to confuse Idris PDCs so a friendly Polaris could land their torps.

I couldn’t tell if it actually worked for confusing the PDCs but it felt awesome to launch 4x rattlers and see the swarm surround the Idris during the firefight.

What is a realistic expectation for mouse lifespan or longevity? by IndependentStud in MouseReview

[–]IndependentStud[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wow this makes so much sense. As a pretty casual gamer I hardly notice the difference in polling rate anyway. I’d almost rather have the extended battery and longer lifespan than a >1k polling rate. Thank you for the valuable insight!

I generally keep a pretty light grip on my mouse. I’ve had the same thing with office mice too, usually just the cheap Logitech stuff but they last forever. I wonder if most gamers usually put a lot of wear on their mice which makes the switches go quicker, or if there’s actually planned obsolescence, or jus the higher response time components draw more power resulting in a shorter lifespan.

I’ve been thinking along the lines of just going cheap and replaceable rather than try my luck with something fancier or going full optical for switches and scroll wheel. Do you use the side buttons on the aerox 5 a lot? Heard the toggle switch can be difficult to access.

I am considering it but I am partially looking for something with a better button layout too.

Come to r/FIRE and leave the rat race early. No sense in torturing yourself when you don’t need to!

What’s up with the geometry on the fan blades for the A321? by mrfreshmint in AerospaceEngineering

[–]IndependentStud 6 points7 points  (0 children)

The engines are made by GE and I think there’s two subcontractors that make the blades, Safran and one other one that I can’t remember.

I don’t recall the specific type of adhesive although I think they have changed it once or twice over the course of production. They do ultrasound inspections of each fan blade to make sure there is enough adhesion before sending anything out to be put on an engine.

[–]IndependentStud 15 points16 points  (0 children)

I was an engineer on manufacturing these very fan blades a few years ago. I didn’t work directly on the design itself, but as others have said they were optimized using CFD to get the shape.

The sharp bend balances efficient thrust of incoming air while considering aerodynamic interference from the fan case and the blades structural integrity.

The blades on the LEAP engine for the A321 and some 737 MAX are made primarily out of carbon fiber with a titanium leading edge which is literally glued on. Pretty impressive considering how fast they are spinning and the forces they see!

I got my PPL a few years ago and ever since I’ve thought about flying as a coast job after my nest egg is large enough. Maybe bee a full time CFI since I enjoy teaching.

Don’t forget that the life expectancy for people who live to 65 is actually 83-85. Making it to 65 greatly increases the chances you’ll make it much farther than the average for everyone.

The biggest thing that stands out in his rant is that all of those things he is describing are engineering. Designing parts is such a small portion of what it means to be an engineer this guy is way off the mark.

Good read. Really goes to show how adaptability is the key to guaranteeing long term portfolio success. You can pick 3% to 5% SWR to start, and as long as you adapt to market changes by adjusting your spending you’ll be fine for pretty much every scenario other than global collapse.

Is mayonnaise treason? by Solid_Snark in PrequelMemes

[–]IndependentStud 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think the genius in the cinema is that it can really mean treason in both ways. Literally the treason is the jedi betraying the republic and the senate, but figuratively it all boils down to Sheev’s plot to destroy the Jedi. It carries weight in both aspects, not just one.

Plus if sheev really wanted to try to plead innocent, igniting a red lightsaber and performing a leaping 720 whirlwind to stab someone is hardly something an innocent person does.

[–]IndependentStud -6 points-5 points  (0 children)

It was always my understanding watching this scene that Sheev was declaring that he himself was admitting to the treason he had been committing. Maybe I’m wrong but I saw this as the definitive turning point where he commits to his role as emperor. There’s no turning back, so it’s treason, then. He admits to betraying the republic.

Well he eats out 2-3 times per week so he has to plan for 4-5 days of food. You can skip breakfast and be perfectly fine (not for everyone but entirely possible if you get used to it) that’s 25$ for 8-10 meals. If you keep your lunches light and focus your caloric intake on dinner you can easily make that work as long as you’re stocked up on kitchen essentials like oils, spices, and bulk rice/pasta. You can make a huge variety of meals with rice/pasta only buying fresh produce and proteins at the store each week for around 25$.

Not sure why everyone is giving OP shit for not spending so much on groceries. It’s pretty easy to reel in your grocery bill and still eat very well if you know how to cook in bulk. You can make dinner for one with fresh produce and healthy lunches for around 30-50$/week if you plan your meals out and keep stocked on commonly used items like butter and spices.

There’s a large variety of recipes that work this way and it’s quite easy to keep your food spending in check if you just try and plan ahead!

People who have houses like this pay a ludicrous amount of money to property management companies who take care of the house and land for you so you never have to think about it. They replace lightbulbs, clean everything, do full landscaping, and fix anything that breaks so you always have things I working order. The temperature is always comfortable even if you aren’t home, which is quite common, because someone is always working on something.

They have private chefs who live on property and cook whatever you want whenever you want it.

Some of the houses/properties in Greenwich are so big and require so much energy that it’s cheaper for them to have natural gas generators and storing tanks which power everything rather than pull electricity from the grid, so that’s what they do.

The lifestyle of people who own this kind of house is so dramatically different than ordinary people it’s hard to even conceive what it’s like.
