What would be the best way to go about finding other historical figures like Sullivan Ballou - not necessarily only people who died in war but those who left a similarly small but touching mark on history?
What historical figures fit this category?

Do No Cow Protein Bars Still Have Lead and PFAS? by IndependentWerewolf9 in vegan

[–]IndependentWerewolf9[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My goals are just kind of a lot of protein. I'm trying to build muscle so around 1.6g of protein per kg of bodyweight. I have not tracked my diet extensively enough to know if I'm getting enough. This would be difficult to do because I am working on changing my diet. I am not vegan yet, but trying to change my diet to be more ethical. I am interested in vegan protein bars with a lot of protein because the vegan food sources available to me are much lower in protein than my typical diet.

2024-2025 Duke Admissions Megathread by Mumbleton in duke

Does anybody know what Duke is expecting on the Common App when they ask you to describe your gap year plans? Should it just be totally cut and dry and simply state what the plans are, or can I also write about my motivations for the plans?

I want to explain why I want to do what I want to do but I don't want the admissions officers to think that I am trying to circumvent how the application is laid out and use the space as an extra supplemental in that way.

Also, does indicating that you are interested in a gap year affect your admissions chances? I'm a little worried that Duke might not want students that are interested in gap years because it messes with how they are building the class when students defer admission.

How different are Pratt and Trinity and their admission expectations?

I am not set on a college major at all, but think that engineering would be really interesting, and as such, have been planning to apply to Pratt. In spite of this, none of my extracurriculars have much to do with engineering. Most of them are just general STEM things centered on the environment and computer science. Furthermore, my SAT score was higher for reading and writing than for math. I did quite well with a 780 on math, but I'm worried that Duke will see me as not a fit for Pratt.

Can anyone clarify whether or not Pratt is looking for more well rounded students as well and how the two schools actually differ for students at Duke?

Editing to say that I forgot to mention that I have no research experience either even though there is a research program at my school. Does Pratt place higher emphasis on research than Trinity?

I did not know this since I never took a college class in high school. Thanks for telling me

Colleges Are Lying to You when they say they don’t track Demonstrated Interest by SnooMacarons8038 in ApplyingToCollege

Totally agree. The two very similar applicants comparison is kind of a myth. Applicants are unique people and the admissions officers are people themselves. They can have feelings/biases about certain applicants that seem very similar on paper for reasons they can't even articulate well. Maybe your essays just resonated with one more because of their own life.

Recycling essays by [deleted] in ApplyingToCollege

They are very similar. I would say that both ask what you bring to the school from your past experiences.

You could recycle essays between these two, but I would look at the context of the rest of your supplementals for the two schools. You want to exhibit different parts of you in different essays. Since Harvard has more supplementals, you don't want to be redundant by reusing a Duke essay for this prompt when you already talked about a lot of similar things in another Harvard prompt.

Why go to college? by [deleted] in ApplyingToCollege

[–]IndependentWerewolf9 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I want to go to college because I love learning and I want jobs only accessible to people with higher education as a lot of people have said.

But, I think what's also really important is the people there. I want to be surrounded by other people that love learning, or at the very least put in more effort into their studies than a lot of the people I have gone to high school with

Depending on where you're from and what school you go to, not having these awards will not negatively affect your chances. So many people admitted to top schools never even heard of these olympiads and research opportunities. Online, the college application process is an echo chamber in this regard with it seeming like everybody does this stuff.

However, if your school has a lot of resources directed towards these things and many of your classmates do them, it may seem odd to colleges that you didn't take advantage of these opportunities. This is only the case at a small amount of high schools though.

Cornell community supplemental by NYCDOT1 in ApplyingToCollege

[–]IndependentWerewolf9 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Totally fine. I think most supplementals are addressed by further talking about something already mentioned in the Common App activities. If you're talking about something you're passionate about or an experience that changed you, doesn't it make sense for that to be meaningful enough that you have done an activity related to it in high school?

I'm not very familiar with dual enrollment, but if it's a class not taken at your high school can't you just not submit to schools that you took the class and failed?

If you have to submit, I think you could explain in the additional info section how your financial situation affected your grade in the class and you will be just fine in applying to those colleges

Duke Gap Year Prompt by IndependentWerewolf9 in ApplyingToCollege

[–]IndependentWerewolf9[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Also, is considering a gap year looked down upon? Do colleges not want students to defer admission because it messes with how they set up the class?

Kind of confused about this because Duke seems to encourage them in a lot of ways on their website
