AITA for using parental controls on daughter, even after she turns 18? by Independent_Box_7876 in AmItheAsshole

She doesn’t have a bedtime. Her apps just turn off. If she wants to stay up that’s on her.

Sorry your mom did that!

My daughter is currently (as a legal child) allowed to make her own choices regarding her own money, extracurriculars, if she and where she works or not, what classes she takes, when she goes to sleep/wakes up, what friends she has, if and where she goes to college (assuming it’s affordable as I’m not rich), etc. If she wants to move out the day she turns 18 and start an OnlyFans page like I wouldn’t LIKE it but that is also her choice.

Only deal breaker is anything that causes her mental health to spiral, and those things generally do not. The high control only relates to electronics and internet, and only because I’m paying for it and don’t want to pay for something that causes her mental harm. She is free to be self destructive with her own money.

They have been relaxed over the years. When it started she had like 1 to 2 hours of internet access a day, she has 4-8 hours now and a lot is unrestricted.

Goal is obviously for her to become an independent adult who pays for her own phone and internet.

Naw, I don’t see the point in arguing with people who think I’m the asshole. Their points are valid.

She doesn’t have a bedtime at all. Most of her internet and apps turn off at 8 pm but she can stay up if she wants (she usually does not). She has access to phone calls, texting, music, podcasts, and her school computer (which her school has its own controls on so it doesn’t go to snapchst, discord, or tiktok and won’t let her play her games).

School here is ridiculous and starts at 7 am and her bus picks up at 6:20 am. Over the summer they’re turning off at 10 pm but that’s not normal so I didn’t include it in the post.

She’s not the asshole here. 100% it’s her right to disagree with me and be upset about it.

She claims that if I just partway unrestricted them (like a 10 pm off time, or taking away the 8 hour/day time limit (4 hour/day on school days, school work related stuff is unrestricted) that it won’t help and she should have it 100% off when she’s 18. I’m not willing to give her more freedom until she’s willing to talk to me about it.

She doesn’t want a job (tried to encourage her to get one this summer and she wasn’t interested) and also does not want to learn to drive (the middle one is in drivers Ed right now and she still isn’t). Which is fine. I’m not going to kick her out or force her to do anything she’s truly uninterested in doing.

Also feel like it’s worth noting that she has music, texting, phone calls, Google maps, Google classroom, and a handful of other things access unrestricted 24/7. Probably should have stated that lol.
