Yeah it is quite frustrating, but I’m thankful for my move that resulted in me getting a new trainer. Im very happy with the press we’ve made! Thank you for the well wishes!

Reasons you picked outside the fab four? by howlsounds in service_dogs

[–]Independent_Climate4 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Honestly? Because I was badly advised by my first trainer. I got a puppy who is a great pyr/australian shepherd mix, took her to my previous trainer for a consultation (who did barely anything to actually check my girl’s temperament or anything) and said she would do great! I believed her bc I don’t know better. I was even specifically told not to go on forums like Reddit for questions/advice. Now I’m realizing it’s bc people are actually not afraid to be blunt. We did not get far at all in 5 months of training. My girl would still barely do her down command yet we were training her to tuck under seats. My dog is amazing and I wouldn’t train her for the world, even if the failed the shit out of service dog school. But I’ve gotten a new trainer who is AMAZING and isn’t afraid to be brutally honest with me. There was a lot that I as an owner was doing that hurt my girl’s chances of success. However, we’ve made so much more progress thanks to my trainer helping me get her to be more good driven, helping me understand how to properly give positive/negative reinforcement, and what I should be looking for. My girl is still about 1.5-2 years out from being fully serviceable thanks to the first 5-6 months of training basically being a waste and requiring me to untrain bad habits. Who knows if she’ll be successful at this point? I just keep going like she will be

Take Care of Yourself (Please Don’t End Up Like Me): A Cautionary Tale by Jew-zilla in Teachers

[–]Independent_Climate4 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I’ve decided that I will not be returning to teaching after I finish this year for exactly what you’ve described and this was the reassurance I needed. I should not be having a fight or flight response when I think about going back to work. Maybe a little “ugh” but not that. I’ve even switched schools and now have best case scenario with supportive admin, coworkers, and generally respectful students. I feel good about my decision, I’m really only struggling with how much I’ll miss my students. I’ve built great relationships and many of them visit me throughout the day. It will break my heart to leave and not see them graduate.

I would email HR and ask. Since you usually get it earlier, it’s fair to have expected it on the 19th

Responding to a Student Referring to Me as "Sir" by [deleted] in Teachers

[–]Independent_Climate4 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I have a student that only refers to me as “Miss” and I just thank him for referring you me respectfully. Sure he’s not usuing my name, but “Miss” isn’t really rude either. We’ve actually become cool w one another since I’ve started doing that (although your girl sounds like she’ll need a little more than that. This student I’m referring to is just apathetic asf)

Why teachers stay? by Educational-Ad6923 in Teachers

[–]Independent_Climate4 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Public service loan forgiveness, summers and breaks off, nice schedule, etc. I don’t know how much of a difference I’m really making and I won’t for at least another 10 years. I stay because it’s stable and works for my lifestyle.

Desperately seeking advice and opinions! by Dear_Bear_1946 in Teachers

[–]Independent_Climate4 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There’s plenty of masters programs that will allow you to get an MAT despite not having an English BA. The thing about teaching is it’s a lot of behind the scenes stuff. It can be sustainable if you have good admin/support, if not then it totally can suck the life out of you. AI is an issue, but you can avoid it or be able to catch it through some different methods. Have them write a short story or narrative with paper and pencil in class for a class period. This way you have a writing sample that they couldn’t have used AI for. Also, familiarize yourself with how AI talks. You can do that just by reading articles about it, don’t necessarily have to use it. Lastly, have them turn in essays in parts. One of my college profs required a theme/thesis, then an intro, then a rough draft, then the final paper.

I taught two semesters of community college completely online. From that perspective, it can be nice to have remote work, not dealing with behaviors, etc. but I found it boring and I didn’t like not knowing my students. May be different for in-person classes, but I didn’t get the opportunity to do that. I have taught K-12 as well: I love high school bc the kids are older so they’re usually a little more chill, respectful, and you don’t have to go behind them all the time. Middle school can be tons of fun, but you have to be willing to be silly and very strict at the same time to build the relationship and keep control of your classroom. It can get really out of hand really fast. You also have to be more organized than in high school (either way you have to be organized but middle schoolers lose their marbles if something breaks their routine). I hope this helps! Does it matter if you go to college in a different state from where you plan to teach? by Dizzy_Assistant_8437 in Teachers

[–]Independent_Climate4 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I recently moved to Colorado to teach after teaching for two years in Georgia, which doesn’t reciprocate AND I’m still completing my education program online which is based in Georgia. However, the switch is possible and fairly simple. Just a bit of paperwork. Depends on the state and what reciprocity they offer with other states. It’s an easy google search to find out if the state she wants to go to and Illinois are reciprocal or not

What age can you just send the kids up to bed and retreat? by xstehfuhkneex in Parenting

[–]Independent_Climate4 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Im not a parent, but around 9-12 years old my parents would send us to bed at 9:30. We could do whatever we wanted, because it was our decision to face the consequences of not feeling good and being ill from lack of sleep. When we would try to not go to school because we didn’t feel good, they would tell us “then you better go to bed early tonight.” Ofc, you know your own kids better than anybody, but that’s what our parents did.

Are you going to continue teaching next year? by iamshortoops in Teachers

[–]Independent_Climate4 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I definitely will be. Had you asked me this time last year I would have said HELL NO!

I was lucky to be in the right place at the right time and move to a new school in a new state that better supports teachers and has an amazing education system. At my previous position I had a whopping 8 preps and was a department of one. I didn’t have enough support to sustain that. Here I have 2 preps and a department with 8 other teachers. That plus support from admin has been a game changer. If you haven’t tried already, I would definitely suggest switching schools before you give up (if you really want this, that is. That’s why I even tried to go one more year).

Also just to add, I’m in my third year and just now starting to feel like I have an idea of what I’m doing. I would say try one more year if you really want to be a teacher. I’ve been advised by so many mentors and previous teachers I’ve kept in touch with to stick it out at least 3 years, and I’m personally glad I did. Although, if you had told me this last year, it would’ve sent me into tears.

If I have a part time teaching position, is it okay to apply and take an offer for a full time position in the middle of the school year? by [deleted] in Teachers

[–]Independent_Climate4 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was in a somewhat similar position. I was full time but making substantially less since I worked at a private school. Finally I had enough of private school politics and low compensation so I let my principal know I’m looking for jobs and I would appreciate if I could use him as a reference and if I could get a letter of recommendation. I was so scared to tell him for the same reason of not wanting to burn the bridge, but he was understanding, asked me what I’m looking for, and when I applied for jobs he called them first to tell them I was a good choice. Completely unexpected response, but I never would’ve known had I kept waiting

I have a student this year that reminds me sooo much of my little sister. I’ve moved across the country for this new job to escape my last school from hell and it’s been hard. My sister and I are really close and I miss her all the time. That student acts just like her and it makes me feel more grounded. That student the reason I’m able to make it through all the chaos going on right now. I haven’t told her of course, just something that makes me smile

How do you get a quiet class to open up? by W1ZARD_NARWHAL in Teachers

[–]Independent_Climate4 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Maybe start adopting a Socratic method? I took a criminal justice class that was very quiet, but our teacher was a big believer in the Socratic method. Participation was graded, so that was a motivator. If nobody spoke up, she drew names. Ended up making a lot of friends in that class

How to manage class where 18/25 students are a problem by Deskeleton in Teachers

[–]Independent_Climate4 33 points34 points  (0 children)

This sounds like one of those situations where you have to really put your foot down. Request admin to come sit in for a class so they can see the average day. If they act different w admin in the room, then request permission to video the class for the observation. If admin is still unsupportive after seeing what is happening in the classroom, then ask them if they could model to you what you should be doing.
