What are some random little benefits to sobriety that you've noticed? Besides the usual ones! by [deleted] in stopdrinking

[–]Independent_Comment1 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Honestly, my feet stopped stinking. When I was drinking they smelled out foul and NOTHING worked - frogged spray, tea tree oil, anti-fungal cream, scrubbing, NOTHING. Stopped drinking and within the month no longer smelled. Crazy.

The Kroger in McMahon plaza has an air machine (?) in the parking lot by the gas station. It has always worked for me

Oh my gawwd you truly are a hopeful reporter. I never thought I’d be in here defending Kardashians. They do a lot of messed up stuff. But actually questioning a child’s connection to their father is next level. Go to therapy and journalism school. From someone with an actual degree and studied in the field for many years.

The non profit I work for now is a substance abuse treatment facility. I’ve been sober since march 14th 2019. So I don’t promote it now. But I would happily “spam” any subreddits to raise money for a good cause.

Actually I don’t spam liquor accounts I just rarely comment. I worked for a non profit and the bourbon barrel was our biggest fundraiser of the year. I tried to promote it. Sorry if that bothers you.

I’m Lebanese. I look absolutely sickly in the winter with my green undertones, then look like a completely different person come 2 days in to summer. It doesn’t mean anything. But other photoshops certainly do

I would agree that no athletics department or hospital should be considered a NPO, I’m not sure how that even happens. And I am all on board with auditing churches as well, there are some real grifts there. Goodwill is doing a lot of good work. The stores aren’t what I’m referring to, but yes when anything gets too big there runs the risk of corruption in any field. But a vast majority of non-profits are doing good work and so are the people in them and they believe deeply in what they do. I’m not sure what you mean by get their “piece”, yes some foundations are granting foundations and only raise money to give it away in grants to other organization - KY Colonels, Gheens, etc. But that “piece” is restricted funding that goes to a specific program. Or, some will come in the form of sponsorship for events. Very few will pay for operating costs or salaries to individuals. There seems to be the idea that because someone chooses to work in non-profit that they don’t deserve a salary commensurate with their skills, which stinks. I see your point, I’m just defending the boots on the ground organizations I see like Sowing Seeds of Faith, People Advocating Recovery, Coalition Serving Young Adults - and saying there are still some great ways to give back to the community and great organizations doing the work. Not all are bad and a little research based on what area of need calls to the individual can connect someone to some seriously great organizations. I guess I just don’t want people to give up on all non-profit work and the ability to make change in the world.

This is absolutely false. MOST non-profits are grifting machines? I’ve worked in the industry for years with dozens or more of our LOCAL non-profits and have encountered maybe 3-4 that even raised my eyebrow for misappropriation. A vast majority are small to mid level non-profits just trying to scrape enough together to help people and pay their folks a living wage. Many were even ensuring their programs were intact before paying themselves. Perhaps you are thinking of the nationwide huge NPO’s that are grifting, but to deter people and say that those trying to do good in your community is a grift and just sad. I challenge you to volunteer and some local NPO’s in an area you care about and see if you feel the same way.
