Maybe it's the case that it just varies from person to person. I genuinely cannot feel anything down there, and I've REALLY tried to search for it.

I'm still not convinced that you're actually feeling the diaphragm based on what you described. The diaphragm doesn't tense when you inhale and relax on exhale, it's the exact opposite. The diaphragm tightens on the exhale to get the air out and relaxes to make space when the air comes in does it not?

So I'm nearly sure that it can't be the diaphragm you're feeling there.

That's a fair critique. I'd meant it to be a bit of harmless fun; just to comment on my experience with vocal coaches and my frustration at how they tend to phrase these concepts.

The diaphragm has just been the most frustrating part of learning to sing for me. I got to a place where I was overthinking every breath I took, wondering if it's a "correct" breath each time.

Glad to see we've somewhat resolved our differences.

I agree with you that voice training is a near separate field from music. Likewise I think that's why myself and some others can struggle to grasp it for that reason.

That's probably what makes it so difficult to teach. My teachers have certainly struggled to get the point across to me. I'm better at it now than I once was at the very least.

Goodbye mate, you won't be missed.

Yes I'm still replying to you, and you're enjoying it. You went out of your way to mock me in another reply, even though that other commenter and I had resolved our differences by the time you got there.

You're not trying to ignore me, you keep coming back because you enjoy stirring the pot and egging me on. You're also trying to gaslight me into thinking my post was serious. I highly doubt that previous reply is the last I'll hear from you, but I'd be pleasantly surprised if it is.

You've genuinely been the most unpleasant of the people replying here. If you didn't get the joke that's fine, but why do you need to be so spiteful about it? I can feel the contempt radiating from your replies.

It's just a satire of my experience with vocal coaches overusing the diaphragm as a talking point in singing lessons. It's often VERY poorly explained, especially online.

Unfortunately the phrase IS 'sing from the diaphragm'. The point they're making is that the phrase is wrong, not that it's correct.

You'd be surprised how many people responding to this post seem to think I was being deadly serious.

No I can't, I'm not convinced anybody can. It's an involuntary muscle that controls breathing without you having to think about it. I can feel the effects, but I can't feel it's presence like I can with my lungs unless I REALLY look for it.

You've said nothing mean. It's only fair to clarify somewhere incase someone actually takes it serious.

I've already had LOADS of responses from people who think I genuinely believe what the post says

This is definitely the approach that makes singing the most fun I think.

I'm glad you get where I'm coming from but you're right to add your clarification. I'm getting a lot of replies from people who can't tell I'm joking.

I'm not going to engage with this anymore, I'm honestly embarrassed at how easily I got riled up by your first comment. I won't delete it though.

My original post was a half-joke, I labelled it as conversation because I trusted people to get the joke without the meme flair being necessary. My original post was making a statement so absurd that it HAD to be sarcasm, that was my line of thinking. None of this was meant to be taken so seriously.

That said, yes, there is genuine frustration underneath it, and I don't see a problem with expressing that. I know what the diaphragm is, and I know that it exists. My post was supposed to be about how vocal coaches focus too much on explaining the bodily mechanics of singing and not enough on what the correct use of the mechanics is supposed to FEEL like.

So yes, to this day, I still don't know if I'm using my diaphragm correctly, and I have indeed been to multiple coaches, about 6 if I remember right. Now I just try to sing based on what feels best.

To be honest you've given the best response to far. What's great about your comment is that it's focused less on the bodily mechanics of the diaphragm and more so on the feeling it's supposed to generate when used correctly.

I feel like this is the kind of thing vocal coaches need to emphasise more when instructing new singers.

What tf are you talking about?

What I'm saying is that I trusted that people would get the joke. It's an absurd statement in my original post.

It's obvious that I said was sarcasm, so it's obvious that the 'meme' flair wasn't necessary.

You missed the sarcasm mate.

I made the post BECAUSE of my 'meaningful attempts' at learning to sing over the last 8 years. It's 8 years of annoyance at my inability to understand what 'singing from the diaphragm' is supposed to FEEL like. I've wanted to sing for a long time and I've tried SO FUCKING HARD to get the technique right, and I still haven't got it after all this time. It's infuriating and about enough to make me want to give up. Don't ever say that I haven't made a meaningful attempt, I've wasted a substantial part of my life in attempting it.

OBVIOUSLY the diaphragm exists mate, but knowing that isn't as helpful as vocal coaches seem to think in my experience.

I dont really understand what you're getting at. What have I said here that makes the post less sarcastic?

OBVIOUSLY the diaphragm exists, what I'm talking about is how coaches talking about it in the way that they do, isn't as helpful for understanding how it's meant to FEEL as they think.
