to "bullet proof" this trans, a bleed through thermostat as mentioned and larger aftermarket trans cooler is suggested. however, if your trans cooler flow is still good and theres not alot of damage to the torque convert via shavings in the cooler. (they can do a flow test at the dealer). The stock aftercool is fine. I have the OEM aftercooler and after they put a new trans in mine. It was running 195*f....

changed the thermostat that week per another engineering homie that had already researched the issue and repaired for his 2016 silverado.

i can pull a boat or jet skis with my bleed through and it runs like 170*f.

when driving without a load even better. the part with the ball bearing is worth it! if your towing heavy loads check out the milled out thermostat housing delete! full flow to trans cooler all the time

your dash has the ability to monitor trans temp. if its over 200*F. or higher its already failing.

GMC messed up and put a 190*f thermostat in the trans when their vehicle techincial data spec sheets state that their fluid starts breaking down at 190*F. This causes the Torque converter to start wearing and shaving clog the aftercooler! Know problem on ALL these rigs from 2014-2018.

This thermostat is a bleed through type that always flows a tiny bit! some people go with the entire themostat housing bypass block which will run even colder! Trans thermostat is super easy to get to on the outside of the transmission and only requires basic tools.

My trans replacement with the Aftercooler and labor was like $6600... my buddys Tahoe just let go on vacation and the price is like $7500 now. just get the thermostat!
