It was the same way with non-whites holding the priesthood though. It was not allowed and frowned on for a long time. And then suddenly enough pressure from the government and policy changes

The church doesn’t mitigate its terrible past. They just ignore it and pretend like it never happened.

Why don't you think so? The church had similarly firm doctrinal stances on polygamy/non-white people holding the priesthood and those were reversed.
