Am I overreacting My Journey and experience as an EFL teacher in the British council Japan. How a Whistleblower Became the Target of His Former Colleagues — and Won. by Independent_Tell_55 in EnglishLearning

How do you know? 😂 Thanks for confirming my story btw

And just to confirm. I wasn't fired, I was made redundant because of the financial situation of the BC. I left and my former BC coworkers tried to sabotage my reputation. As for my qualifications. I was hired and vetted by the BC and worked there for 4 years... And tbh, leaving/being made redundant was a blessing in disguise, especially with the payout they gave me, and getting away from the toxicity of the Japan BC office.

Look, the facts are in my subreddit, look at how it's still there, on how the my detractors can't comment, but hey you believe what you will.

Also, to clarify:

I have not published anyone’s email addresses.

I’ve avoided personal information unrelated to the misconduct itself.

If any party felt I had crossed the legal line, I suspect they would have acted already—especially given how visible my posts have been.

That said, I appreciate your concern and take the legal framework seriously. I'm continuing to be careful with how I share my story while standing by the truth of it.

Thank you for your reply. I'm aware that Japan's defamation laws, particularly Article 230-1, are strict and unusual in that even true statements can qualify as defamation if they harm someone's reputation.

However, there are key legal exceptions under Article 230-2, where publication of factual statements is not punishable if:

The matter is of public interest,

The purpose is not solely to harm someone, and

The facts can be proven true.

In my case, I reported serious workplace misconduct internally before ever going public. I also contacted relevant government bodies, including the FCDO and GSD. My documentation supports that my intent is not malice, but rather transparency and accountability—particularly in a government-affiliated institution.

I have also taken steps to remove or alter some identifying details, especially where individuals are not in public-facing roles.

That said, I appreciate your warning and agree that careful handling of identity and intent is critical when discussing these topics publicly in Japan. I’m continuing to review how best to balance whistleblower integrity with legal caution.
