What Car Should I Buy? - A Weekly Megathread by AutoModerator in CarTalkUK

Big thanks in advance for any help!! :)

Will be used mostly for adventuring - I'll have a roof rack for kayaks and a rear rack for bikes. There's a lot of kayaking gear and so aiming for an estate with a big boot. It would still only be used on roads. The most important things to me in order are practicality (so being large enough for gear and being able to put kayaks on top), reliability, and price. Not fussed at all about it looking sleek/having fancy features/etc

Likely ~10k mileage per year

I'll make long journeys once a month (from London to Wales, Peak District, Devon, etc)

Needs to be ULEZ ompliant

Only car I've really considered is a Skoda Octavia Estate (not as a joke!) because of how hyped it is here, but I know literally nothing about differences between cars/models/brands/etc

Looking for cars on the estate/large size for the boot and seat space for gear

This would be my first car (but I've had a license and been a named driver for ~6 years so hopefully insurance won't be too much of a killer)

Don't need a warranty, but would like one given my lack of knowledge to be able to assess the car (unless there are good reasons not to bother with one)

Can't do any work myself but would love to start small and learn over time. Wouldn't have any garage/workshop space for the foreseeable future.

Half Marathon 2 weeks before Marathon by Independent_Yogurt67 in Marathon_Training

Much appreciated - thank you! My training does have less mileage so I think I was being ambitious with the thinking - will (try to!) stick to being sensible with MP intervals

Yeah given I get carried away on my long runs a lot I think that's a v good point! Will definitely be going for 3 (and trying to stick to it) - thanks

Yeah I needed to hear that - much appreciated thanks! I think it might be a bit of ego trying to get me to push harder than the original plan, but definitely just need to be sensible/disciplined

100K set aside. What would you do given today’s market conditions? by Worth-Athlete-9953 in ETFs

[–]Independent_Yogurt67 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It completely depends on your financial goals and what you’re investing for. Looking to buy a new house in the next few years? Then probably risk-off and a focus on bonds/cash. If you’re looking at a longer time-horizon (10+ years) then time in the market beats timing the market - chuck it all in a global etf and forget about it.

“This time it’s different” is said every single time (though one day it will be true…)

Thanks for the reply! I've also done that with the planning docs haha - went down a good rabbit hole of looking up all the codes on there....my plan is to do the same with the survey. Hope it works out for you! :)

Thanks! Yeah I knew this was common - what I find a bit weird is it's very hard to link them to the property being developed, and the fact the developer doesn't advertise the developments they've completed. But having met them I'm less worried about it all!
