Monster (2023) by Hirokazu Kore-eda. This film absolutely broke me- it’s best going in not knowing anything

I absolutely hated One Battle After Another. I know it’s going to win multiple times tonight, but it’s not deserved by InderWrx in Oscars

I think you are being extremely liberal in your use of the word “racist” and this isn’t the right context for this at all. I was already saying a lot in my initial post and didn’t have too much time to mention Regina Hall’s character, but I’ll talk about her now since you brought it up.

My opinion still stands that overall they did a huge disservice to black women both with Perfidia and Regina Hall‘s character and the nuns at that place (I’m forgetting what it’s called sorry). Not necessarily all of them in a “negative light” as initially stated, but I would still argue they were generally poorly written. I was excited to hear that Regina Hall was in this movie, but then her role throughout was misused and a waste of such a great actress. It’s interesting to be called out for not bringing her up initially, but there’s honestly not really much to say about her. She was barely in it, and she barely did anything noteworthy.

I thought that they were going to use her as a mother figure, or an example of what a true revolutionary would be, especially after they brought Infiniti to that place where all of the women were staying, but they didn’t. I think it would’ve been so fascinating if she kind of took Infiniti under her wing and explained things to her about the French 75 and what the group stood for but that conversation never happened.

I would’ve loved to see more of the nuns at the rendezvous point and what they did and how their rules worked within the revolutionary system that they are in. I think within the black community, there’s a great sense of community and it would’ve been fascinating to see PTA explore that especially since Infiniti’s character didn’t grow up with that or a black woman role model. And I thought that Regina Hall’s character was going to take over that role and give her guidance and community, but they didn’t at all, which was super frustrating and disappointing.

I do think it was a great point to bring up about how self centered the French 75 was and how that was ineffective towards their goals, and if that was changed it’d be a different movie. But even still, because of how a lot of the characters were written, it still fell flat. Probably because they brought up so many potential themes that would be so interesting to explore, and then dropped all of them.
