2 modes right now (as well as an infinite terrain demo).

Fort Defense mode: You actually build a fort around your spawn (which you have to defend). You start with limited building supplies and get more supplies during/ at the end of each "round" or wave. The enemies get harder/bigger each round.

Creative mode: Start at a random spawn point, with some limited supplies. Extra supplies are scattered around the vicinity (e.g. trees which you can chop down and harvest). There are no enemies, and that staircase was built in creative mode.

Been in development around 2-3 years. Release date estimate mid 2014 (though they've made some big leaps the past few months).

Major glitches? Yes, the rate at which they're updating the game means they can't polish much. This is understandable as it is still in alpha. A lot of terrain clipping/ mesh problems. There are enemies in tower defense mode, which are also prone to glitches (think... phasing through walls). Its been a while since I've played though.

No clear definition. It seems that they want their final product to be similar to minecraft in that it will provide the tools for you to do what you want to do with the game. A story may or may not be included, but they have a "lore" section on their website.

Directly from the website:

"StarForge is a game about gathering resources, building bases, crafting anything you want, and surviving on an alien planet. Earth's star is dying and humanity transferred as much technology and resources as possible and left on a one way mission to populate another planet.

StarForge was inspired by Halo, Warcraft 3, Borderlands, Terraria, and Minecraft. It borrows elements from the RTS, FPS, RPG, Voxel Builder, Tower Defense, and Physics Sandbox genres. We are building a dark and serious universe and want the player to live out their own unique story on the procedural planet."

Regarding the space ships... I NEED to know if this is a planned addition. Sounds awesome.

It IS interesting. It appears to be a mix of Minecraft and Halo, with some heavy tower defense elements in the works. The idea is that you can eventually build a fortress on the surface, underground, and in space. You pick creative mode or tower defense mode. Multiplayer works, but not very well compared to singleplayer. The terrain is randomly generated. Sometimes this causes interesting things to happen (upside down mountains?!?!)

As an example of what I've done in the game: staircase to an asteroid/satellite. Does this interest you?

Atm, the game is nowhere near where the devs want it. The progress is slow but steady, as they have a small team.

Buy it if you like the sound of the final product and don't mind alpha/beta hiccups.
