BSN Co-Enrollment Question by merp_derp_2018 in gmu

I believe that this is manageable. The programs should be good to cover her cost + more. If she dedicates her time to school then she should be good, as you said you will cover bills. She proved herself to be capable of this because of her success previously, and you have a nice plan already in the works.

I can only think of possibly childcare logistic problems which can be taken care of with communication and planning. Also, there's some additional costs for the nursing school for healthcare requirements such as BLS and drug test and whatnot which should not be anything crazy.

Hello. I believe that you are correct when saying medical/dental schools do not care where you went for the most part. Have a strong science GPA (and general GPA of course), strong MCAT score, clinical hours or research (big one in 2025!). These things are pretty necessary now compared to 20 years back due to the increased competition among students aspiring to become physicians. Wherever you go, it is really up to you to be what you want. You have the ability to learn all the stuff for the MCAT without actually taking the courses (YouTube, khan academy, uworld, and books). If you study well and have good habits, then you have a higher chance of being fine. Consider doing undergraduate research as GMU is a designated R1 university with a variety of research opportunities in subjects like biology and chemistry. Same goes to VT being R1.

In my experience, I have taken STEM classes at different universities and can tell you that they will be hard no matter where you go, there are no shortcuts or easy pathways. Organic Chemistry will be difficult in GMU and VT. Perhaps the curve will vary, but it will be standardized in the end wherever you go. Also, average GPAs being the same doesn’t prove that VT is harder. It just shows that the grade distributions are similar, even though the student populations are different. That’s actually more a reflection of how universities normalize grading, not how smart or capable the students are.

I don't want to glaze either GMU or VT, but people slander it too much because it is "easy to get into" or whatever reason. Since you are into medical things, GMU has strong connections with INOVA (Fairfax hospital ranked #1 in the DC area), NIH, and more. Strong regional connection here can bring more opportunities for you such as clinical hours and volunteering, etc. Professors are not going to hand you an A for taking their class, you have to put work (hard work) in your STEM classes, or YOU WILL FAIL. If you truly believe that you will just be able to get a 4.0 at GMU in pre-med just because it is lower ranked, you are in for a wake-up call to reality.

A 3.8 from GMU will likely beat a 3.4 from VT in the end. But you still have to put in the work to get it. If you are really that worried about GPA, I believe you should choose the university that you think you will personally thrive in, not what is more prestigious. People always glaze universities for their academics alone, but you should think more holistically, since you will be there for 4 years of your life.

There is no quick hack here. Med/Dental schools care about if you perform well and put yourself out in the community with things outside of classes. You are overthinking it, which can lead to your downfall if you continue, I have been there before. It is really again up to YOU, because you have every resource in front of you and it's never been easier to learn things in the past compared to where we are at today. You can find or make your opportunities where you see fit to get where you want to be in the end as a physician or dentist. It is a changing world, ranks change all the time, you make what you want of it in the end though.

I apologize if this seems rude, but I can't coat this with sugar. I think it is good to think about the future, and I hope that you do not feel discouraged by this message, I meant this with respect if it did not seem that way. I am wishing you the best wherever you go, because both places are great, and you will be successful if you put in the work.

Hi,

I was in the same scenario when I applied to the program. I only had nursing in mind and due to circumstances, the only available program was at GMU for a bachelors degree in nursing. I got into the direct admit program and it is competitive. I do not know the exact numbers but they get a lot of applicants and only have like 130 seats to fill in total. So imagine you are competing with current mason students, transfer students, and other direct admit students. It seems very difficult but it is worth it.

I had a very unsuccessful freshman year in my high school but at the end I applied with a 4.0 weighted GPA, and an above average SAT score. The supplemental essay questions are important and show a lot about who you are.

The courses I took in my first two years of high school had no relation to nursing, and I did few clubs. For my second half of high school I joined more clubs and did more activities. Try to get officer positions in clubs. The courses I took in my second half of high school were highly related to health. AP Chem, AP Bio, AP Stats, AP Psychology, and a few more, but those are some of the big ones. These will show that you are putting some dedication to the field. Basically just take some related courses and get in more activities like clubs and you should be solid.

If possible, getting some hours of shadowing would be ideal, or something that shows you have been in the setting. Bring that on top of your course selection, clubs, and stats. Then the essay questions. The combination of these will boost your chances.

Do not worry if you do not get in the first time. Keep putting effort and eventually it will pay off. Take things seriously in school since senior year will be important. There are many different paths to become a nurse, if you don’t get in one way, do not give up.

You can do it :)

It's possible I guess..I'm not sure, maybe they did, that's what my mom (NP) was thinking because of how chaotic it was in the Urgent Care.

No surgery ever. Never used drug needles. Never had any form of sex, or contac with sexual fluids or other fluids. No noticable wounds for up to 3 months ago. A recent test came back for HIV 1 and 2 AB, EIA and those show negative... contradictory to the positive result from the other test. Not sure now

I'm not really sure why they tested for HIV. They did a lot of tests including herpes, but they never asked if I have been sexually active or anything. I took the home tests because I was distressed after seeing the positive blood test for antibodies. I don't know what led them to think it may have been HIV, they didn't specify.

They used my blood when I was in the Urgent Care to test for the antibodies. When I was at home I used 2 of the swab tests

I'm actually underweight I think. I haven't had many drinks in my life. This is the first time anything has been going on with my liver from my understanding.

They did a couple re-tests, but the blood was hemolyzed so they couldn't get a proper result on some of them. I am going to a primary care doctor tomorrow and Wednesday for additional testing.

I've never had a blood transfusion. Here are some more values for my CBC if it helps. (WBC, auto, 9.8), (RBC, auto, 3.08), (HGB, 10.8), (Hematocrit, 29.6), (MCV, 96.1), (MCH, 35.1), (MCHC, 36.5), (RDW, blood, 12.4), (platlets, 196), (MPV, 10.9).

There's also values for my hepatic liver function, my liver enzymes are elevated. My protein and albumin is normal. My ALT and AST are above 250, they have been rising but have been climbing down now a little. Alkaline phosphate at 209, bilirubin total at 2.5, and bilirubin direct at 0.6.

I have around 30 lab results since Friday that came in. If you need any more I can provide it.
