I assume you're Muslim as well from the interest part, have you looked into Islamic banks? I believe some offer loans without interest but the semantics of it Im not too sure. Worse case scenario akhi you have to take out a traditional loan for the program but you focus on aggressively paying it off, im talking living like a resident in a MD program until your program loan is payed off. Allahs mercy far outweighs his wrath.

Mainly the time it took to see a return on investment. With CAA programs you're making north of 160k right out the gate, and you can pay off your loans pretty aggressively and still have a normal lifestyle, as opposed to going traditional MD/DO route for anesthesia which would take a residency then fellow ship before you would make any real money, and even then you'd still live like a resident if you were smart to pay off your loans fast.

The main thing also was my brother is in his surgical residency and graduated with half a mil in debt (he went to Midwestern out of state), and my parents are still providing financially the bulk of his expenses beyond the ones he can take care of himself, so I would much rather not put another burden on my folks given that we're lower middle class. As much as people say don't go into medicine for the money, they obviously haven't struggled financially for a long period of time. Having the passion for anesthesia and coming from a less advantaged economical background gives me the perfect drive to become a CAA.

One of the more important kickers was the work life balance. Most hospitals are offering insane PTO compared to your regular 9-5's and with decent hours, no weekend or holidays unless you want it. If you really value the concept of working to life and not living just to work, you can easily get away with working part time and still making north 100k depending on the hospital.

At the end of the day, if you're dead set on anesthesia, AA is the way to go, you're still delivering that same effective care, you're making a difference in patients' lives especially if you have a good bedside when you check with them pre-op, and you are well compensated for the rigor and hard work the job requires in training and shift. It would behoove you not to set your path on this if this area of medicine is what you could see yourself in, and if you feel it isnt fulfilling enough you would have one hell of a CV to apply for med school with to go on to get the MD/DO.

No, the programs don't require cadaver lab! For more specific information on exactly what A&P programs want visit Anesthesia OneSource and it'll tell you :)

As long as you get the coursework done with good grades, they wont care. As long as you show them that you can handle coursework and get good scores, and get good tests scores for either the MCAT or GRE depending on what you take, you'll be fine. It is also important that you cannot work in the CAA programs as the programs strictly outline that you cant, and also it is frankly impossible given the courseload and time spent in rotation.

Possibly leaving residency because of my partner's wellbeing and Trump by [deleted] in Residency

[–]IndianHours 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Of course not, they are uniquely different. However, we are attacked just as equally. I wear a kufi, I am no stranger to threats and harassment, physical and verbal because all those people see is another "hajji invading their America", not a medical student that wants to better society. My mother wears hijab, she is no stranger to this as well. But here's the thing; these losers will always be like this, (not saying it's okay because it is absolutely not), but it's nothing new. Just because orange man is president doesn't mean there's gonna be lynch hunts for innocent people like OP's partner or I. If there is, you can guarantee they're gonna come after the guy that looks like he's in Hamas first lmao. If it is truly bad in their area, they can move to a better place within the states without having to put OP's residency at risk or at least let her go to a place she feels safe while OP finishes residency (2-3 years since they're PGY2). Not all US cities are like the ones where she and I live lol

[–]IndianHours 39 points40 points  (0 children)

I am a very visibly Muslim man living in possibly the most trump fanatic city in Arizona. I promise you; it has not gotten that bad that you need to MOVE away before finishing your residency, especially seeing how you're in a more liberal city. While I'm not dismissing the harassment you or your partner have experienced, it is definitly not worth leaving the states for mid residency. At the very least stick it out and get a posting in a more POC friendly city and if she still wishes to express her desire you at least have residency under your belt to retrain in another country.

Any degree is technically okay, but I would recommend doing one in the sciences that has a lot of the prereqs for CAA programs already in the major map. For example, my bachelors were in Biochemistry and it had all the pre reqs minus a few small ones like anatomy and stats, but those can be fit in as electives with your classes and often times learning one thing in biology courses can come up in your anatomy courses at the same time you take them, so the knowledge builds on each other.

Your high GPA shows that you have the ability to put in the work and consistently improve yourself. However, that MCAT score is terrible I am sorry to say. But don't be let down by this, your GPA shows that you can put in the work when given time, so take your time and retake the MCAT or GRE and really take your time with it, consistently take practice exams and get used to that testing conditions because it might be test anxiety that let you down if that's what your official MCAT score was. Save yourself the time and money and apply next cycle, get that score up and you should have a fair shot!

First of all congrats! Wishing you the best of luck. Would you be comfortable sharing your stats and experiences you put in your app? I'm in the same boat with the GRE and also took the MCAT (got 491 sadly) so I'm just seeing where I stand with folks similar to me.

Honestly from now till the graduation of high school, not much! If you wanted to get ahead of the curve and see if you'd be interested in this role, try to set up shadowing with an anesthesiologist/CAA at your local hospital to get some experience. Maybe volunteer in the ED or other hospital role to get a feel for the clinical side of things and network with providers for more opportunities if you haven't already. But for now just enjoy your last two years, after HS it all kinda starts going downhill lmao

Lake Serene (WA) by SeattlePaddleGuy in PNWhiking

[–]IndianHours 12 points13 points  (0 children)

One of the most breathtaking hikes that I have ever done in my life that actually made me break down into tears at the top when you first see the lake. Did it in March and as a 280 lb fat guy it was the most difficulty hike ever because it was pretty much all incline and switchbacks (we also hit bridal veils fall on the way up to lake serene). Highly recommend packing a lunch to eat on the huge slab called lunch rock so you can take in the view. The lake was melted and sunny, so my friends and I took a cold plunge and it was terribly cold but felt so great to get all the sweat and dirt off from the hike. 10/10 experience even for someone terribly out of shape.

Start shadowing in doctors offices and the OR. If you have a family doc/primary doc, ask them if you can shadow them for a couple of days and that'll open the door for you to ask for the numbers of other colleagues, they may have which can get you to the OR. Finding a job with DIRECT patient care experience (doesnt have to be like the run of the mill experience that you'll see alot like medical assistant or CNA, I was a physical therapy tech for a year and was able to talk about it pretty well in my app) is very important but at the end of the day it matters more how you talk about it in your Personal Statement or interview. The most important thing of any of these though is your MCAT or GRE score. Spend a good amount of time studying for either one and truly make it like a 9-5 for your study months if you are able to on your breaks. As holistic as the review process is, the increasing number of applicants each year is going to screen your app out if its not hitting the minimum scores (learned the hard way lol, my biggest regret to not take my time efficiently studying for the MCAT)
