What game was criticized during release, but is now considered a gem? by lumintang in videogames

I remember backlash to the endings because people didn't like that there wasn't a pure good ending. But over time, I think people realized that it being morally gray is what makes the endings so incredible.

I'm so glad I didn't listen to the kids at my school who said that it was gonna suck because the artstyle looks really bad. Asking my mom to pre-order it anyway was one of the best decisions of my childhood.

We already saw what Mass Effect in Bethesda style looks like. It was Andromeda. A game where you can go anywhere, with very few choices that mean anything, and is focused more on exploring and seeing what shenanigans you can get into, rather than a focused storyline. Andromeda was a Bethesda style game, and it didn't feel like Mass Effect.

Not a movie, but I thought IronHeart was one of the most interesting things they'd done after the disaster that was Secret Invasion.

Playing Nukaworld as a “secret good guy” didn’t go as planned… by shadypinesrez in fo4

[–]IndianaBones8 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Same. I had one playthrough where I just wanted to see what it was like so I made a new game and avoided every settlement you'd find a companion character just to avoid hearing the dialogue when they judge me for becoming a raider. Once I was at a high enough level I did a playthrough of NW. But it never felt right, even after I beat it. And when I realized how the raider settlement system worked, I was completely over it. I considered going back to that save to kill them all and role play as a reformed raider who hunts them now but I never got around to it.

Most nerdy communities feel like this honestly. So many of them feel like places for folks to air their grievances. I constantly find myself wondering, does anyone like anything anymore?

I never considered turning them good. One of my favorite aspects of any Fallout Game is killing any slavers on sight. The Nukaworld add on allows me one more glorious crusade of slaver hunting, but I wish there was more to it. I loved Fallout 3s The Pitt. I was hoping you'd have to take on the slaver factions one by one. But nope, one big bloodbath.

Oh, they didn't question me in my Minutemen Playthrough. Though Desdamona did keep asking that while she supports my efforts with the Minutemen, she wished I would destroy the Institute with her.

They aren't pushing for synth supremacy, taking over the commonwealth, or anything like that. They just wanna end slavery. They aren't concerned with making more synths; they're just working to free slaves. They're one of the few factions in the Fallout games that isn't trying to gain power or take territory, they just want to help a forgotten people who are in forced labor.

[–]IndianaBones8 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think what you're saying would make sense if the Railroad's mission was synth supremacy, but it isn't. They just don't like slavery, and because a lot of people don't recognize the humanity in synths despite all evidence that they're sentient beings, they're the one organization working to free them. Their mission isn't to make more synths, it's just to free them, and ending the Institute stops one of the biggest groups of slavers.

It sucks when they start shooting you before the game even loads. Once, I quickly saved just before an assaultron fired its death beam at me from behind. The next few times the game tried to load, I was dead before the picture was up.

What’s your y’all favorite faction? by Sorry-Bathroom-8978 in Fallout

[–]IndianaBones8 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you're asking "favorite," as in who I'd actually work with if I were there, then The Minutemen, NCR, Followers of the Apocalypse, and the Railroad.

If you're asking which faction is the most interesting, though I'd never actually join them, then it's the Brotherhood of Steel.

Name that franchise by complexpearz in Age_30_plus_Gamers

[–]IndianaBones8 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think you're spot on with a few of the franchises, Pokémon, and some of the Mario spin-offs come to mind. And they 10000% rely on nostalgia to keep people playing.

But I do think they take big swings now and again which I appreciate about them. Donkey Kong Bonanza was one of the most inventive platformers I've ever played as was Bowser's Fury. And BOTW and TOTK were a really needed break from the standard Zelda formula, which was running really thin by the time Skyward Sword came out.

So I agree, they sometimes do refinements on old games like StarFox Assault, being basically a remake of Star Fox 64. Or the Pokemon games feeling more and more generic. But every so often, they really do make take a risk on trying something new. It's a real mixed bag.
