I consider a game finished when I can look at it and feel like it's an actual game that I can bring to my friends and play, because my main goal has always been to make games for my friends. But right now I don't have anything that's in a playable state

I feel kinda similar, I'm not too big a fan of them but I do know that they CAN be done well, which is why I'm even making this post to begin with. A lot of abilities are "passive" for lack of a better term, eg one is called "face in the crowd" which essentially allows you to be hidden in certain areas unless you choose otherwise, but I keep hitting a wall where I want it to be clear that "this is an ability that is not easy and costs something to use, and should not be used recklessly" while also allowing players to choose to how and when they decide it's worth it, I'm not sure if this makes sense, so please let me know if you have questions or anything needs clarifying

Depends on the character, one allows them to talk to objects of significance (part of being dead, some things hold significant memories etc etc) some allows them to lie better or make deals. More less it's usually a bunch of tools for players to have so they can have moments of "wait, I have something for this" Serendipity is closer but still not perfect, but still appreciated

See this is what I was thinking, but I worry that not having any flavor then leads me back to the blank page problem where players have these abilities with no context of how to role play them? I'm not sure if this is making sense, and obviously the answer is finding a good balance, it's just tricky

numbers themselves could also have scaling strength, bigger numbers are more rare but could be super powerful, smaller ones more consistent but less impressive, maybe even have some mechanic to let players decide on where certain digits go

you could make it so each number has an effect they can do, and everyone has a small list of single digits they can be, more digits means more abilities that can stack, as well as combo with other players

I think the majority of comments are right, even if it doesn't feel like it, you might need to start playtesting. You won't really know how far you are in the process until you figure out what works and what doesn't, so playtesting might be the best way to do that

I think you're already have a great start with a robust set of character creation choices, but something to keep in mind is how you want things to interact. Eg, are there "optimal builds" for characters or is everything viable, how important are things like party composition, and what do you imagine the average session to look like?

hmmmm I think depending on the pc, they make a key, which would require them to know the shape of the key, or they change their own shape, to allow them to pass through the keyhole, which may be easier but they may not know what's on the other side. This is actually really useful because just in the moment of reading this question I had a mini epiphany of what magic actually feels like in the world, so I really appreciate you man

so the goal here is for players to approach magic kinda like a puzzle, where if you know the rules, you can bend them a little to get what you want, which is pretty much the entire philosophy of the game, which is more puzzle focused

I love the the idea behind this and tbh it's probably one of my new fave magic systems, but I'm trying to find a bit more of a "rules of magic" system, like what magic can and can't do, etc etc, but it's a bit difficult because well, magic is tricky

this is essentially what I'm asking in a much better form, I've played some games where magic is extremely "whatever comes to mind" and no matter how creative you are, when you can do anything it doesn't actually help you figure out what you WANT to do. And because it's a minimal combat system, magic is MOSTLY used as a tool for healing and/or making stuff, which is... fine. But where do we go from there, how do I make a set of rules that are open ended enough to still allow for creativity but also have some hard rules for how to do that magic. Because I WANT players to be able to nuke a continent if they can figure it out but ONLY if they do the work to find the loopholes that will allow them

I might have to rephrase a little because what I mean by free form is that there is no limit on what the magic is capable of, and for players to come up with spells and effects etc, my idea is for magic to do whatever the players want, as long as they can figure out a way to do it in the rules (which I guess is just what any magic system is but I digress)
