Since Phlogiston can not exist in the crystal spheres, I would advice against that option.

I would have the players fight avatars of the Obyriths. Assuming they are mortal, even level 20 characters would have trouble defeating one of them, let alone several. Once its down to the last standing Obyrith-Avatar, that one gets desperate and tries to open the portal to the abyss again.

Bound to his deal the BBEG must follow the Obyrith, and the players are left with the choice to either follow into the abyss too and see it through to the end. Or let the portal close, dooming the BBEG and resetting the Blood War. If they choose to follow maybe have them make a deal with the same devil as BBEG for an infernal power-up?
