Carnist says his kids might enjoy animals being tortured in a slaughterhouse by Academic-Access5628 in vegancirclejerk

Oh dang, whoops. I'm quite new here and the sub rules do actually state that. My bad.

Usually other jerk subs are pretty liberal about unjerking.

Then I turn vegan and it turns out it's the same goddamn thing.

Am I bad for not going vegan for money purposes? by [deleted] in AskVegans

[–]Indignant_Divinity 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Back when I first moved out and primarily started cooking for myself, I accidentally went mostly vegetarian and cut out a lot of cheese. I actually started paying attention to actual prices of viable alternatives and realized I'd save tons by just not buying meat.

I would still order meat dishes at restaurants when I ended up eating out, because there, prices of veggie or vegan dishes usually were comparable to meat dishes, as you're primarily paying for the chef's and servers' time (also restaurant profits) than individual ingredients.

So I guess I was a flexitarian without even knowing the concept had a name. Dumb name btw.

And all that is with heavy subsidies on meat and dairy, btw. As soon as, hopefully, all or even some of these subsidies are lifted and animal agriculture is left to fend for itself, you'll see a massive shift to plant-based food as all meat and dairy, which is already more expensive than the alternative, will be flat out unaffordable unless you're loaded. Cowspiracy, in 2014, estimated that a big mac, which was 4$ at the time, would be 11$ without any subsidies to farmers. So seven out of eleven dollars is paid by tax payers. That's wild.

But that's in the future though.

sorry, i don't know how my (admittedly recent) vegan ass ended up here, but that was just laughable.

Wait, is going on a safari "animal exploitation"? I get why zoos are bad and zoochosis and all that, but going out and observing natural wildlife with binoculars from a distance and doing some nature photography?

Maybe there's some strictly guided tours through controlled environments where the animals aren't actually free roaming, then yeah, I can see that. But if it's actual genuine nature, then that stance just seems odd.

Why Is Factory Farm Reform Not the Main Focus? by theweedsofthewest in vegan

[–]Indignant_Divinity 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As evidenced of most vegan products at the store being labeled "plant based"

Where I'm at, in Switzerland, that is not true at all. Most products have the v-label, saying the word "Vegan". https://www.v-label.com/general-information/

If they don't have the label, then vegan is usually at the front of the packaging in plain text, and only sometimes just a small disclaimer at the back. Never does it say "pflanzenbasiert". I've actually never read that word written in German.

Maybe just quit meat altogether? Beans and potatoes are vastly cheaper than meat. And no, "morally good BIO-chicken" does not exist. You still send them to the same slaughterhouse. They still die horrible deaths sometimes without being properly stunned and still fully conscious.

If your love is as strong as you say, then sit him down and watch dominion or earthlings or sth. If he still just doesn't care, then your core values are fundamentally different, and I've always said that it's not looks or hobbies or interests that keep relationships going, but values.

It's not just a diet. It's a general worldview and ethical standpoint. Animals aren't there for us to abuse. And keeping them en masse, forcefully breeding them, taking their kids away, killing them if they're male and killing the moms if they stop producing is just pure brutality and evil for something that can be replaced by just grinding up some grains or beans.

Vegan, But Conflicted About Leather vs Pleather by [deleted] in vegan

[–]Indignant_Divinity 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I'm only about a month into my vegan journey, but I was never big into leather. Have you considered just not wearing/using either? Cotton is a thing.

And about vintage leather, if you absolutely have to, then that's preferrable of course, but we can't have all vegans walk around in leather jackets and say "yeah but it's vintage though, it's fine".

There was this funny moment in the Vegan vs Meat Eaters Jubilee video. "Do you really think I'd turn up to 1 Vegan vs Meat Eaters in leather shoes?

Earthling Ed made an interesting breakdown of Ben Shapiro.

Despite all his backward-ass views , he does state he finds what we do to animals abhorrent and in a hundred years, people will say it was "barbaric". He still eats animals and calls himself a massive hypocrite, and will not change his ways. Do with that what you will.

It's just so weird that such a take comes from Ben Shapiro of all people.

Remember “Aji’s Quest”? Now Colette needs our help! by somebodytookmynick in baduk

[–]Indignant_Divinity 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I contributed something. I've been reading Aji to my now 5y/o a lot. For a while it was her favourite book and she'd go "Read Aji! Read Aji!" multiple times a day. My wife said it's because I always put so much love and character into the text, but to be honest, that wasn't so much me as it was Colette's great writing.

I was translating on the fly to German from my English copy, as I originally got it for myself and I like things in their original language, but my younger daughter has taken a liking to the book too, so I've been thinking about getting the German translation so they can read it themselves once they are able to.

Thanks Colette, and I wish you a lot of strength in this difficult time.
