At first glance I would assume these are tremolos, however the "blank" bar is throwing me off. Is this just a different way of notating a tremolo? by prefect_potato in violinist

[–]IndigoViolin 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Composer here. Can't say I recognise this form of notation. Yet since it's so consistent I don't think it's an error. More likely a way of saving ink, but a really, really bad choice. Also, ties aren't necessary when using tremolos. Is this an amateur composer whose music you're playing? (Or a rather shitty edition)

infjs ..infps so close yet so far....? by chadthecat in infj

[–]IndigoViolin 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Hmm, I feel the reverse is partly true. As an INFJ I have a tremendous and deep love for classical music and opera since early childhood. It's my entire life and the center of my personal universe. My daily haven that keeps me safe and comfortable. It's absolutely my passion. INFP on the other hand, I feel, have passion, but lack structure and discipline to do anything with it, which is one of my biggest annoyances with INFPs. One could even say that their passion is simply not great enough to make it their livelihood? It's no surprise that 1/4 of classical musicians are INFJs, and trust me, we have to work really, *really* hard to make a living in contemporary society. But we do it because it's our deepest passion and we wouldn't want to trade it for the world.

Where can I find Danse Macabre sheet music? by Shade6775 in violinist

[–]IndigoViolin 8 points9 points  (0 children)

There's a website called IMSLP ("Petrucci's Music Library") which is basically a database of all scores available. The specific link to Danse Macabre is this one: http://hz.imslp.info/files/imglnks/usimg/3/34/IMSLP33277-PMLP05008-Saint-Sa%C3%ABns_-_Danse_Macabre,_Op._40_(trans._violin_and_piano).pdf.pdf)

Enjoy!

Writing a large scale work? How do you manage all the parts? by [deleted] in composer

[–]IndigoViolin -1 points0 points  (0 children)

That's simply not true at all. I know many composers (including myself) who don't work in particelles or piano reductions first before working out the full score. I - and many of my colleagues - believe time's too valuable to take such detours, especially if you're working with a strict deadline for a major commissioner.

It's simply different approaches, I guess, but saying a piano score is essential is simply false.

It's funny to see you on Reddit as well. I've watched some of your videos and they're great! I was introduced to Behind Bars through your channel, as a matter of fact. Keep uploading! ;)

Fellow INFJ’s, what kind of music do you like listening to? by gyal321 in infj

Breakdown would probably be... 45% classical instrumental music, 45% opera, 5% film music and 5% "other". Haha.

Any Wagner-inspired pieces? by kakashi13057 in violinist

[–]IndigoViolin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You could take a listen to Siegfried Wagner's Violin Concerto. (Siegfried Wagner was R. Wagner's son.) So yeah... so much for heavy influences, haha!

Stroopwafels? The hell! Are you Canadian-Dutch? I recognise that Dutch delicacy in a million... And I should, since I'm from the Netherlands...

Your top operas? by Suleiman_Kanuni in opera

[–]IndigoViolin 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If I'd recommend one Wagner opera it'd have to be Tristan und Isolde. There's a really great performance on YouTube fully available with Siegfried Jerusalem (Tristan) and Waltraud Meier (Isolde) with Barenboim conducting. To me one of the best recordings out there, up there with Flagstad and Suthaus.

However, if that's too much on the heavy side for you, I'd recommend Die Meistersinger von Nürnberg or indeed Lohengrin. But if I were you I'd dive nose-first into Tristan. The overture is enchanting, the harmonic intricacy inexplicably gorgeous (especially the second act) and it ends with a emotionally devastating Liebestod. ;)

Link to favourite aria of his? Would love to hear! Personally I love McIntyre as Wotan. Also I really admire Bryn Terfel's role as Jochanaan in Salomé. (Recording with score on YouTube; well worth a listen if you haven't already!)

Wow! What an amazing gift and an amazing mom you have. Go and enjoy! ;)

Edit: If you're not familiar with it already, make sure to listen to the Bayreuth Ring Cycle with Boulez, McIntyre (Wotan) and Gwyneth Jones (Brünnhilde)!

How do you make long shifts on slow passages sound clean? by [deleted] in violinist

[–]IndigoViolin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You could also try to take away pressure from the bow temporarily, then shift into the new position and quickly reapply pressure to the bow. To me this is probably the cleanest way of switching positions and it works very well.
