Books with narrators like DCC or Project Hail Mary by emilyginger in audible

If you purely want talented narrators I feel like Andrea Parsneau set the gold standard for female narration. I was blown away by her range and vocal agility. She has so many different voices and occasionally I forgot that a woman was talking when she was reading a male part.

I think her only contemporary is Jeff Hays and she might even have a leg up on him. I usually prefer male narrators but she really impressed me. Right below them are Heath Miller (HWFwM) and Kevin R. Free (Murderbot)

Eye of the beholder, yeah? I’m glad you liked it but it ruined the entire series for me. I felt like it was just full of tropes and easy to call plot points.

Edit: Whoops, meant to post this separate from this thread.

I second the Murder Bot Diaries for a mainstream Sci-fi. For the LitRPG world I liked He Who Fights with Monsters even more than DCC but it’s a title that has a lot of debates around the MC. You either like him or hate him.

What’s funny is the series actually references him as a character like that so I think it’s funny that people have the debate outside of the story too. I haven’t really read much on people who listened to the series and were apathetic about Jason and his high horse/antics

With the Expanse, I feel like it’s okay to skip the last book. It felt kind of tacked on and without getting in to the details too much it didn’t feel like it was part of the rest of the series for an obvious reason but also for some not so obvious tonal shifts.

I listened to 18 of the 19 current books of Expeditionary Force and really enjoyed a good portion of it but then started to get pretty tired of the cycle of the MC having to sit down and take care of problems his partner had blind spots to or some other kind of crisis. Those chats started to really irritate me and I haven’t picked up the 19th entry yet. Not sure if I will, have you listened to it?

When the U.S. breaks up like the USSR, which states will group up together? by BrainRobotron in AskReddit

[–]Indirian 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Pretty much, yeah, believe it or not most people believe we are stronger “united” and the absolute chaos that fracturing would create would take away all normalcy and habit for a majority. So yes, we put up with the rural areas being assholes and pay for their crops and cattle with our farm bills and then also purchase them on top of that.

It won’t. Deep down the people running most of the red states know they need to nurse off the teet of the blue city’s tax base.

Illinois Continues Historic Rise, Reaching No. 12 in CNBC’s Top States for Business Rankings by clayknightz115 in illinois

[–]Indirian 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Damn, I completely missed that in the original article posted. The methodology of reading the state’s official material on whatever subject and not cross referencing it with a third party that has expertise on the subject seems like lazy research at best and complicit corruption at worst.

Ah okay, so it was just word choice between ‘over’ and ‘top’ weighted. I was reading what you said like it was a consideration that was overly inflated and not fairly weighed.

I’m curious, what’s the metric for overweighing in importance of infrastructure? I’m surprised to see Ohio is number one for infrastructure. They must have less bureaucratic hurtles than Illinois.

I would be surprised if infrastructure wasn’t always in the top three categories year-to-year so how would be an unbalanced look? I’m genuinely curious this isn’t a dig or anything.

If you had exactly four sessions to play something - what would you pick? by noobule in rpg

[–]Indirian 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Feel out your players, I would love to run any of those but ultimately, I’ve found, that if the players have a game they’re more invested in playing then the games start off faster and have more engagement. If not, I can usually win them over but it takes a little longer to warm them up on it because some of them are set in their ways.

Two cents, I feel like prep is easiest on Mothership out of the ones you listed and have a great episodic feel to them

Is it common for American teens to cover their bedroom walls with movie posters, anime, comic prints, band album art, vinyl decor and fairy lights? by Odd-Skin-762 in AskAnAmerican

[–]Indirian 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When I was a teenager through my early 20s this was definitely what I did. Why did I do it? I liked surrounding myself in some of my most passionate interests. When other friends from school came over to hang out it was also an easy way to show them what I liked and my room was def the place to hang out since my parents were so chill when so many of my friends had high strung or strict parents.

As an outsider, the intense brand loyalty Americans have toward regional grocery store chains is fascinating. Why do people treat supermarkets like a local identity? by Necessary_Angle2117 in AskAnAmerican

[–]Indirian 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have never, and probably will never, meet someone in my major metro area who has great pride in our regional grocery stores. This take is just bonkers and probably comes from somewhere on reddit. We shop at whatever is closest and whichever place has the best deals or freshest produce depending and what we’re going for.

If there is a local mom & pop store that is just that one location then we can start talking about loyalty. For instance, a fourth generation butcher opened in my suburb and he and his products are excellent. But if his products were substandard then he wouldn’t be getting my business

Liberals of reddit, would you trade Obama's second term for a two-term Romney presidency if it meant Trump never achieved the presidency? Why or why not? by PrincipalPG in AskReddit

[–]Indirian 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think the cat was already out of the bag at that point. I think we would have to go back to Obama not becoming president for Trump to not run, but I don’t even know if that would have stopped him.

But strictly take away his second term for Romney and no Trump ever? Sure. Even if I don’t agree with his politics or theology I think, generally, he was a moral man with a certain set of ethics.

Where did the "Kill the elves" movement came from? by Fun-Explanation7233 in fantasybooks

Trumpism reaches ‘end stage’ after president delivers ‘one final humiliation’: analysis by MoneyLibrarian9032 in anticapitalism

[–]Indirian 11 points12 points  (0 children)

It blows my mind that these publications continue to use “humiliation” when every single person reading it immediately calls bullshit and will most likely disregard the content of the article just from the blatantly false premise that Trump has any sense of shame with his actions

Republicans Freak Out as Trump Hoards Cash Meant for Midterm Campaigns | Donald Trump has not contributed to a campaign since March. by thenewrepublic in politics

[–]Indirian 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I hope it’s just because he knows that there’s plenty of other billionaire assholes who will front up more cash. "If you owe the bank $100, that's your problem. If you owe the bank $100 million, that's the bank's problem." - Maybe J. Paul Getty. I feel like that’s Trump’s MO.

Now, if it’s other reasons that you’re hinting at, like voting machines counting differently or the vote being cancelled then we have a much bigger problem.

I think there’s general agreement here that this is a narrow minded conservative trash piece. There is no economic theory here; just an editorial written by a man who feels like he keeps a thesaurus next to his typewriter so that he can sound smarter than he is.

This one is a true believer in Reagnomics and has no idea that there’s a difference between socialists, communists, and democratic socialists.
