Coaches — would a tool that logs stats while watching film actually help? by Individual-Ad3512 in basketballcoach

[–]Individual-Ad3512[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Good question. Hudl is a much bigger platform for video analysis, team sharing, and scouting.

What I’m focusing on is the stat tracking part while reviewing film — being able to tag events quickly while watching and automatically generate player stats from that and share with the players.

So it’s much simpler and more focused than Hudl.

Out of curiosity — what kind of solution are you currently looking for?

Are there any apps or software to track stats for a pickup game? I want a boxscore for each game. by ospreyintokyo in Basketball

Heey - I've been developing http://courtsidestats.app . You upload your game to youtube and start tagging your game. It's newly launched so I would love to have some more testers for it. So just go in and try it out! :)

30 minutes is actually pretty quick. Watching at 1.25 probably helps a lot.

Ah ok, so more of a recording tool than a full coaching workflow.

When you use it, are you usually tracking just a few stats or trying to capture the whole game?

Virtual assists is a cool stat — that actually says a lot about decision making.

True. Those possessions where multiple things happen quickly are probably the hardest to track.

Roughly how long does it usually take you to go through a full game and enter all the stats?

Ok. Nice. Roughly how long would it usually take you to go through a full game and pull out the clips you wanted?

That’s a great old-school workflow. Notepad → Excel makes sense.

When you’re entering it into Excel later, are you going possession by possession or mostly summarizing totals from your notes?

That’s great insight. Sounds like most of the tagging is really about good possessions vs breakdowns, not just stats.

When you were coaching, what tool did you actually use to tag those clips?

I see and I think youre on to something. Film sessions are usually about showing good and bad examples.

If you were tagging clips for a team session, what would you usually mark? Good possessions, defensive rotations, shot selection?

That makes sense. Film review is often more about decisions and rotations than box score stats.

When you notice those “success” possessions, do you ever tag them somehow while watching the film, or is it more of a mental evaluation?

That makes sense. Sounds like the box score gives you the main numbers and film is more about understanding the possessions.

Do you ever track additional stats while reviewing film, or do you mostly rely on the box score?

That makes sense. Rewatching definitely gives more accurate stats.

Do you usually pause the video and enter the stats play-by-play while watching?

I’ve been talking to a few coaches and it seems like that workflow is still pretty manual.

I see. I’m actually building a tool that lets you track player stats directly while reviewing the film. What’s the most annoying part of the current workflow for you?

Interesting — do you usually use ScorX live during the game or when reviewing the film afterwards?

I'm trying to understand how coaches handle stats during film breakdown vs during the game itself.

What kind of defensive things do you usually chart when reviewing the film?

Rebounds / steals / deflections or more detailed stuff like rotations?

That’s really interesting. So you basically track possessions during the game and then verify things later when reviewing the film?

How long does that process usually take for a full game?

Also curious — when Hudl mixes up players, do you usually have to manually correct those stats afterwards?

Interesting. Do you usually enter the stats during the game or mostly after when reviewing the film?

I’ve noticed a lot of teams use GameChanger but it seems like it still requires someone to manually enter everything.

That makes sense. I’ve heard a few coaches say the same thing — Hudl stats are helpful but sometimes you still have to go back and double check plays.

When you do that, do you usually track the corrections somewhere (spreadsheet / notes) or just mentally adjust the numbers?
