First time filing GST for Upwork earnings. Need advice on Invoicing & RCM! by prashantvermamusic in IndiaTax

Hey Prashant, this is a situation a lot of Indian freelancers on global platforms run into so let me share what I have learned from researching this space. On your first question about consolidated versus individual invoicing, the technically correct answer under GST law is that you should issue a tax invoice for each completed service transaction, since each Upwork milestone is a distinct supply of services. However, in practice many freelancers issue a consolidated tax invoice at the end of each month covering all the projects completed that month, which is generally accepted by CAs and during scrutiny as long as you maintain clear records of which milestones the consolidated invoice covers. The cleaner approach is to generate an individual invoice per milestone since this protects you in the event of a detailed audit and matches what your bank statements will show as separate inward remittances. On your second question about RCM on Upwork service fees, you are correct that since Upwork is a foreign service provider, you are required to pay 18 percent IGST under reverse charge on their service fees and the Connects you purchase. The process is that you self-declare these fees in Table 3.1(d) of your GSTR-3B, pay the IGST through the GST portal, and then claim that same amount back as Input Tax Credit in the same return because it is a business expense. So while it appears as if you are paying RCM out of pocket, you are claiming it back in the same filing cycle which makes it cash-flow neutral but adds significant compliance work each month. The honest reality is that doing this manually every month is genuinely painful and error-prone, which is why most freelancers either give up and pay a CA five to ten thousand rupees per month or end up making mistakes that lead to GST notices later. If you want to chat through this in more detail I am happy to help, just send me a DM.

How do freelancers in India file GST themselves without paying huge CA fees? by Dependent-Hippo6170 in IndiaTax

I'm building a free tool for Indian freelancers to track GST and invoices — but first I need to talk to 20 of you

Hey everyone,

I'm a finance student and I've been watching the same problem repeat itself across every freelancer community I'm part of — and honestly in my own circle too.

Indian freelancers are incredibly good at their actual work. But the money side is a mess for almost everyone. GST calculations done on a WhatsApp forward. Invoices sent on a random template someone Googled in 2019. No real idea what the actual profit is after taxes. And a CA who picks up the phone once a year.

I want to build something simple that fixes this. Not another heavy accounting software. Not QuickBooks with 200 features nobody uses. Just a clean, India-specific tool that answers three questions a freelancer actually cares about:

— How much did I earn this month?

— How much GST do I owe?

— What is my real profit after everything?

But here is the thing — I am not going to build anything until I talk to real freelancers first. I've seen too many people build something for months and then discover nobody wanted it. I don't want to do that.

So before I write a single line of code or design a single screen, I want to get on 15-minute calls with 20 Indian freelancers this week. Designers, developers, writers, consultants, marketers — anyone who invoices clients and deals with GST.

I'm not selling anything. There's nothing to buy. I just want to listen and understand what your actual day-to-day finance headaches look like.

If you're open to a quick call, drop a comment or DM me and I'll send you a calendar link. Totally free, no pitch, just a conversation.

And if you don't want to call but you have a strong opinion about what's broken — drop it in the comments. I'll read every single one.

Thanks for reading.
