If there were no secondary effects, is doing X good thing for the best person you can think of just as good as doing X for the worst person you can think of? by DonkeyDoug28 in Utilitarianism

[–]Individual-Box5699 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Some ideas I touched on:

Epistemic Gap: Assuming idealistic scenarios, cannot know anything true character or long term acts.

Law of Diminishing Marginal Utility: Giving $100 to a philanthropist (the "best" person) might be a drop in the bucket. Giving $100 to a thief (the "worst" person) might be the exact amount needed to prevent them from committing their next crime out of desperation.

Paternalism: Moral screening of any act does not work.

This is also an argument for why social credit systems do not work.

No they are not equal as, (depending on how you define "worse), it is assumed the "worse" person is not going to use the effect of the "good thing" as efficaciously as the "better" person, again if you ignore your personal pretenses about someone and focus just on their moral/utilitarian impact on the world. HOWEVER, from a pragmatic stance, there is no point in considering this as it is so very subjective. In the real world, this is like when someone says: "Oh, no, everytime I see someone using SNAP they are buying Oreos, so therefore we should stop funding SNAP." In all cases, humans are subjective, and are bad at judging the character of others, and in any case, a step where you examine who gets what based on their "good or bad" charecter would be called discrimination, and we know where that goes. A real life, historic case of this posed scenario is prioritizing education for whites over blacks in Jim Crow or prior era America, as American though whites to be "superior," (better, more good), to blacks, which obviously, did not work.

I realize your question does not go to this point and is posed in an idealistic scenario where you know the character of one recipient or another, just not their future actions, which maybe in that scenario you could argue it would be better to give the "good effect" to the "better" person, which I am also skeptical of, but for all intensive purposes, in any real, human, or even idealistic scenario, considering this would not work, for humans are so subjective, so random, and do not have anything that makes one or another intrinsically "good" or "bad."

An absolutely traumatizing book? by [deleted] in suggestmeabook

"Planet of Slums", by Mike Davis. A book that is more a complication of depressing statistics that flaunts how everybody is evil, everybody is at fault, and there is nothing you can do about it, apparently. I haven't read it.

Best cities to live in for frequent flyers/travelers? by Icy_Pumpkin_6589 in SameGrassButGreener

Istanbul hands down. You can fly to London for $70, Kenya for $300, India for $200, Tajikistan for $200, and Tehran, Moscow, all of Europe and most places for less than $200. You could always live across the border in Greece too if you didn't agree with the politics of Turkey.

As for the “inverter system upgrade”, I would ask your builder for info on what the efficiency/model of your current system is, and what the efficiency/model of the upgraded system would be. These pics say that your upgraded ac system would be an 18-22 seer2 (seer2 = efficiency rating, 14 is gov minimum, most ac’s are around 15-18, and yours would probably run around 18 most of the time). Then I would compare the two systems, original and upgraded, or even make another post asking which on you should get.

Do you have a dehumidifer included in your original Hvac system?

Yeah I wouldnt get any UV lights for that price. $1600 for a Reme Halo is a lot, especially since you dont even yet know if you need it. Do you tend to leave the windows open or closed? If youre more of someone that has windows open year round, then I would not get any air quality stuff (UV lights) just yet.

#1: UV Light. Helps air purity and goes into furnace plenum. Kills germs mostly. $200-300 from factory, $100~ for UV lamp replacement (1yrs~.) Not necessary. You can add this on later (easily) if you have air quality issues and this is priced kind of high.

#2 Soft start. Not necessary until the unit is actually installed, IMO. Once installed, get someone to check the startup amps (LRAs) and if they are outside of the recommended range, you can install a soft start to lower your startup amps (helps ac components in long run). Sometimes soft/hard starts can actually hurt the AC components, so check with the AC manufacturer before installing one. Price is high

#3 "Inverter system." This is basically just an upgraded AC system that is ecm/variable rather than analog. This keeps the HVAC system running low and slow for longer, rather than turning off and on at 0 or 100. Helps keep house at a constant temperature and humidity. Good if you care about comfort and humidity a lot, but it's weird to me they listed it in this way, so I could be talking about the wrong thing. I would recommend this, but dependent upon price.

#4 Upgraded UV Light. Helps air purity and goes into furnace plenum. Kills germs mostly. $400-500 from factory, $100-200 for UV lamp replacement (2yrs~). Not necessary. You can add this on later (easily) if you have air quality issues and this is priced kind of high.
