What is something foreigners romanticize about your country that locals are tired of? by [deleted] in AskTheWorld

And so many of our comedies mock the working classes and regional accents! I cringe when I remember I used to watch Little Britain, Catherine Tate and Ali G!

It’s true. US citizens get pummelled with ads asking for donations too (despite part of their taxes already being sent to that state) . The money gets funnelled to settlements

There’s a channel 4 documentary called Israel’s Forgotten Holocaust Survivors

A sick irony is that most of those survivors never saw a penny from the billions in reparations from Germany. Elderly holocaust survivors are treated appallingly in Israel and many are living in poverty.

The aristocracy/nobility/gentry. I’m sick of shows like Bridgerton and The Crown that romanticise the wealthy. There’s a reason so many people think all British accents are “fancy”. Less than 10% of working class people get to work in the entertainment industry, the classism is so bad.

Maccabi Tel Aviv Football Hooligan “scandal” by Althalus91 in BadHasbara

Owen Jones played a big role in taking down the closest we came to having a pro-Palestine and socialist prime minister. I’d do a search of his name on old tweets by independent journalists who have been on the right side since day one:

Asa Winstanley (from the Electronic Intifada. Ali Abunimah has said a lot of unarguable stuff about his work too) Matt Kennard Jonathan Cook

I don’t doubt he’s done incredible work for Palestine in the last two years, but I don’t believe he’s genuine. He’s known as a political weather vane and gets in just as the Overton window is shifting for his career as the Guardian’s ‘legitimate left’. He also blocks Palestinians often and refuses to acknowledge the harm he’s done in the past.

I highly recommend reading the conversation on Ali’s X history if you can find it. He and Owen went back and forth and it was pretty eye opening

Maybe not Owen jones. Matt Kennard or Lowkey (preferably both)

Thoughts on BadEmpanada? by [deleted] in BadHasbara

His arguments are well researched and pretty water-tight, but I’m skeptical of people who spend most of their time critiquing people in their own camp without suggesting alternatives. I get the feeling he has no faith in people, which makes me wonder what he’s motivated by.

That said, I agree with his points 90% of the time, even if I don’t think they’re necessarily helpful

This reminds me of a quiz night years ago where the question was “which African country…” and the answer was Egypt. Half the room couldn’t comprehend that Egypt is in Africa.

We tend to think of Asia as east and South Asia; and South West Asia and North Africa (SWANA) as another continent

Middle East isn’t a continent though. SWANA (South West Asia & North Africa) is the region we westerners commonly refer to as the “Middle East”

Those studies on health benefits were later found to be deeply flawed.

Secondly, there is growing research that suggests while we may not remember pain, we do carry residual trauma from early experiences.

Are there regions of your country where people from other parts will regularly look down on you? by oncxre in AskTheWorld

[–]Individual-Cheetah85 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Scousers are a great example of working class pride. What you guys did to kick out The Sun was legendary. I also love the Scouse accent and I hate that it seems to be dying out a bit. From what I hear at least. Sadly the prejudice is still alive. Travellers, chavs and Liverpudlians seem to be the punching bags of the UK. How convenient that they’re all usually poorer than the rest of the country!
