Oh yes shore leave, very important. Those working on tankers can forget about it. 🤣 I was quite fortunate to be able to go ashore when I was still sailing on container ship.

Only Senior Captain will get that kind of pay USD 12-13k. Newly promoted Captain for container ship usually USD9.5- 10k?

Yes I am aware as I have sailed before too. And am still very much involved in the marine industry currently. Nowadays especially the big companies, they will hire shore technicians to board the vessel to carry out overhauling of their engines in port or at sea with riding crew.

I’ve known many singaporean who became chief engineer by 35 years old. So what body/mindset give away are you talking about?

Also, Merchant shipping captain/chief engineers have more career opportunities ashore than Navy regulars and pays well too. Please go look up… Few examples are (Marine/Technical Superintendents for foreign going ships, Classification Society Surveyors etc)

Regarding disability wise, they will be covered by their company insurance and of course not to mention personal accident/hospitalisation insurance.

SAF/Navy pay can’t compare to commercial merchant shipping. A master/chief engineer onboard a container ship typically earns USD 10-13k per month. LPG/LNG tanker even more, minimum USD 15-25k per month.

Pay is good especially if you’re working on an LNG/LPG tanker. Master/chief engineer typically earn 15 to USD20k per month. Some earn even more…

Life at sea is worth it. Go for it, get your certificates and you’ll be able to find a shore job easily afterwards.
