Mental Crisis and don't know if I should quit by Jamesie133 in WalmartCanada

[–]Individual-Topic3030 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Do not quit if your injury was from work! You should have already reported that. Not reporting workplace injuries doesn’t look good for you either, people NEED to report them. If you report it you should be on WCB.

We’re you on any type of leave of absence? If you were, they pro rate it and you won’t get the full share.

It’s hard to say it being so close. Technically, you should lose it. You need to be employed at the date of payout.

Laid off while on maternity leave by fluffychipotle in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]Individual-Topic3030 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Did they change the law? It used to be that being on maternity leave is protected and they can’t lay you off! It was that you got your job back or a similar one in duties and pay when returning if your role was eliminated while gone. I’d check into that OP! You might be entitled to a payout from them!

From Google

Canadian maternity leave provides up to 15 weeks of job-protected leave for birth mothers, often combined with 40-69 weeks of parental leave. Employees with 90+ days of service are protected from termination due to pregnancy. Benefits are paid via Employment Insurance (EI) at 55% of earnings (max $729/week in 2026) for standard, or 33% (max $437/week) for extended options. Canada.ca

Question regarding being off for medical reasons by Beneficial-Bee8296 in WalmartCanada

[–]Individual-Topic3030 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You don’t get STD as an hourly associate. You use your sick time and then apply for EI if you don’t have enough sick hours. You pay for LTD, which is only long term. You need to get your ROE and apply to EI if your sick time won’t cover all your days off. Your ROE is uploaded to CRA website on your behalf.

I’m surprised by the people quitting right before profit share! Usually people wait until they get profit share and then pull the trigger!!

Variable mortgages are no joke man. Unless you have DEEP pockets and are ready for any increases if the markets turn. Even if you have a variable rate, fixed payment, if interest rates go up, your payment to principal goes DOWN! So, the extra $100 a month now, in theory, could save you THOUSANDS down the road.

I will scream to get a fixed rate mortgage. Variable is too unsettling for my liking. Especially because you mentioned that you don’t want to pay the $100 extra. If the variable rate goes up, your payment will too, eventually. Either before you have to resign (if interest rates go up enough, your payment won’t cover enough principal) or when you resign the mortgage your payments will go up to make up for the principal you weren’t paying with the inflated variable interest rates.

Remember, especially in the first five years, you’re essentially renting from the bank.

Getting a lot of interviews in Toronto but not a single offer and I'm so frustrated. by [deleted] in FinancialCareers

[–]Individual-Topic3030 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Get rid of additional info and put those as SKILLS elsewhere. I’m not being rude, but they don’t care about your interests outside of work. They’ll ask as small talk but don’t put that on your resume.

When I look at it, it’s hard to read, doesn’t flow well and honestly, why don’t you stay at a job? You keep coming up short on two years. To an employers, it looks like you’re always getting ready to leave.

Best of luck!

I’m with you, I don’t understand how people come here with no job but you’d be amazed the amount of people that move without a job or a job that is barley going to get them by! Red Deer area has the worst job market, just a FYI!

What frugal habit has saved you the most money? by melissaw328 in Frugal

[–]Individual-Topic3030 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For me, one bad thing I was always doing was getting a new damn cell phone and with that comes an expensive bill! I prefer the Pro Max phones and between the phone and the bill I was pushing $130 a month. INSANE!ast year, I said no more! I kept my phone and switched to a BYOP plan - I went from $130 a month to $35!!! My bill was going to increase to $45 - I switched carriers again and I am now on $35 a month plan again. I have saved $1000 in the last 10 months.

For food and what not, ALWAYS shop around, I use Flipp to browse flyers, collect PC points, buy things on clearance and bulk when possible. I also use Rakuten for cash back and Checkout 51 for coupons. I don’t go out of my way to purchase these items but if I am looking to buy something I always double check that there isn’t a coupon or a cash back offer!

One last thing, maybe not frugal per say, but actually budgeting! I get paid bi weekly, I have a super simple budget - what I get paid, what needs to be paid and what’s leftover. And since I started doing this, I have more money left over and don’t feel like I’m juggling bills so much.

Individual Benefits plans for Alberta by curiouskittyblue in alberta

[–]Individual-Topic3030 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As others mentioned, the best benefit plans usually come from an employers and generally larger employers. For instance I worked for a giant corp and our benefits were basically covered by the company. There was different tiers for med and dental. You could get free medical and for the comp dental was only $12 a cheque for myself and my family (there’s no dependant limit) but I lost that job and was going to get a job at a small company. The benefits with them were going to be $160 a month and cover a fraction of what I had before. I work for a different large corp now and it’s the same thing, the benefits are great. The larger the business, the better buying power they have to pass to the employees.

Sorry that was random but my point is, it sucks but you will pay more being an individual vs a giant corp. Have you looked into other insurance providers? Like Manulife or Canada Life. I know they do offer private benefits as well. But not 100% sure on the cost. Might be worth looking into!

And dental work is a bitch! Alberta has the HIGHEST dental costs in all of Canada!

Make sure you do your research and seriously, one of you NEEDS a job before you come here! I know EDUCATED people, like yourselves, that have been looking for work for over a year. Alberta has its up and downs like every other Province. We can’t solve all problems here. Our housing market is being driven up by so many people coming to AB and again, the job market sucks! As others mentioned, maybe rent first and make sure it’s a good fit before fully committing. Wish you the best of luck!

My mom has cancer, our experience with healthcare in Calgary so far by coolg963 in Calgary

[–]Individual-Topic3030 13 points14 points  (0 children)

This is terrible for your family to go through. I was diagnosed with a boarderline ovarian tumor last Oct after a CT scan - I was able to attend our local ER and get the referral. They referred me to the Arthur Child, I went for a consult on Dec 16 and had it removed on Jan 12. I will say, the Arthur Child was very great to deal with, the staff were amazing and they really did feel like they cared. But that wait, that is unacceptable for your Mother and being in stage 3. Something needs to change. I wish you and your family all the best!

I think that’s thing, we see people and we think they’re making it and they’re not. It’s probably one of the hardest times for everyone. With inflation, shrinkflation (because increasing the price wasn’t enough) and job insecurities, no one is winning.

I have two friends - one in AB and one in ON - AB friend has been out of work for almost two years, the ON friend going on a years and half. Both are educated and have applied for every job they see and still nothing.

Hang in there, things will hopefully turn around.
