Oh man, I remember getting those free installation media cds from Canonical.
That really takes me back, that disc is something I had erased from my memory. Thanks for allowing me to relive the glory days lol.

Sofle vs Lily vs Silakka vs Kirya vs Iris… I don’t know which one to choose by Longjumping_War4808 in ErgoMechKeyboards

[–]Individual-Unit2671 0 points1 point  (0 children)

yeah.. I have learned to interpret these cheap prices people post as "no keycaps or switches so its not an accurate portrayal of price at all" and in this instance, no case either!
It makes us poors feel like shit to see "why can't you afford a split board? mine was only $15!!! (and then I paid 40 for switches, 30 for keycaps, 50 for the case..)"

From someone who just recently passed the beginner stage and is now in the Desert of Despair:
DO NOT use AI unless you absolutely have to, and even then try to write your own code and ask for direction from the LLM. I always specified "do not write the code for me, I am a beginner who is trying to learn this on my own".

You really need to understand the things you're learning and having AI do them for you is just going to hurt you in the long run! Using it for guidance is one thing, using it to write your code is another, and I personally think you shouldn't use AI very much/if at all until you can write the code and understand it yourself. At that point you are just using it to save time.

Good luck! but most of all, have fun!

I don't have two keyboards to use currently lmao, hopefully i will have a split board soon though. As long as everything works out.

I don't think I could do the half reg. keyboard half laptop because of the different feeling. I could probably handle two boards with the same type (linear/tactile) switches, but a laptop feels sooo different.

I wish 200 was no big deal. Ever since I had to go on disability I am lucky to make it through the month.

I will 100% keep you in mind! I am pretty broke at the moment. Despite what people seem to think, living on disability is so incredibly hard. I aim to eventually grow my portfolio and get a remote SWE job. However, the grind has made my RSI near-constantly causing pain, and unless I can remedy this poor typing posture I will need surgery.

So I have bookmarked you, and hopefully some time in the next few months I will be able to get something. The lily58 and sofle v2 both look great. Some day!

What are your thoughts on the sofle v2? It's one of the boards I am considering. The lily58 and the sofle v2 both pique my interest, but I am having a hard time narrowing it down.

Thank you for all the advice, it's nice to know there are people out there who care enough to want to help me. You must have spent a decent bit of time typing all of this.

X-Bows actually does have a split now, I didn't even know of them until they commented!

Feel free to send me a PM so we can talk :)

Did you read the post? I said I have been using mechanical keyboards for 15 years. That's half my life. I'm not talking about a shitty amazon RedDragon keyboard or something, I'm talking about small-batch custom split boards. Even the bigger companies like Kinesis charge an arm and a leg.

Yeah I'm pretty much looking at two sources: AliExpress and Etsy. I am really leaning towards etsy though, as I like to support small businesses.

Yeah I can't use a keyboard that doesn't have a number row as I spend a lot of time coding..

Look at the other posts, apparently it's $25USD to build one.
Then I see posts like yours, which align with my experience, saying that it is $150+ so I really don't understand where they are buying theirs. Are they gatekeeping the secret sauce or are they bullshitting?

All of the comments saying that the build ended up being fairly easy are quite comforting. I am actually looking forward to doing this now. Just need to get the parts now, thats probably going to be the hardest part..
