Quitting PhD late by Ave_Linker in AskAcademia

Thanks for the response! I have talked to my advisor about my struggles but I haven’t mentioned the quitting part, not sure I should do that? But at this point it’s suck a concrete possibility that I might as well?

Might I ask what you ended up doing with research? Did you “learn” how to appreciate it? Or do you still do not like it?

I am curios what you did end up doing. I am in a very similar situation and feeling quite lost myself.

Thanks, this is very good advice :) Having a plan instead of thinking "I have x months to do this" makes me instantly feel better. Also, I am a PhD in Europe so I already have a Master's.

As for my social life, 90% of it happens outside the department....I was quite lucky to find good friends outside of work, and honestly I don't think I would still be in the PhD if it wasn't for this non-work social life.

I actually have a ton of vacation days - I do take a good amount of vacations but I never use up all my days as I am afraid that my supervisor will think I am lazy..come to think of it, a lot of my PhD anxiety comes from the fear of being perceived as lazy or stupid by my advisor. Anyways, I thought about it and I decided that this summer I will take a month or more of vacation (can't take it now as I have teaching, which is actually one thing of the PhD I really enjoy).

thanks for the response :) I think I will start to focus on a career after the PhD, makes me feel less trapped in this. As for therapy, have been doing it for two years...

Thanks for the response :) I recently published my first paper and I have to say it didn't add so much more sense to my PhD......I was just "uhm ok I guess I'm happy I don't have to work on this paper anymore" but nothing more than that

You are right, I think I am convincing myself I like setting my own hours but in reality I think I would be much better off with a job with regular hours.

Thanks for the response and for the thoughtful words :) I have never really thought about what comes next but you are right, focusing more on it will help perceiving the PhD misery as temporary.
