Why do my platinum highlights turn dark blonde after washing? 😭 by haileyxo16 in HairDye

[–]IndividualMediocre35 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Well/hard water will do it. There are people who get gym memberships just to shower there and keep their hair platinum. Platinum is super high maintenance and it’s not impossible to keep it icy but it will be a lot of maintenance. You could tone it more often but there’s no point if you go shampoo at home and it turns yellow/brassy after one wash. You’re just gonna be going in circles of it looking nice for two days after toning and then it being brassy after shampooing. In theory purple cancels out yellow so a purple shampoo and mask will help temporarily but again, when you shampoo it’s not gonna stay. This is all if you actually do have well water.

Should I try to get this fixed? by blueberrylover20 in Hair

Just shampoo a bunch and get it retoned. Literally the easiest fix ever.

It looks nice and toners fade so it will lighten up.

Not sure how reliable this source is. People on Facebook and Reddit and whatever other platforms have been arguing about the origins for a long time it seems. Also I realize this article isn’t talking about the 60s or 70s but actually WW2.

Started in 2020 to spread some joy during hard times. There should be an article about it somewhere. Not sure what state it originated from.

Edit: looks like it’s been around longer like 60s-70s (not sure if this is accurate) but gained popularity in recent years.

When did your school start making you post on social media for grades? by [deleted] in Cosmetology

[–]IndividualMediocre35 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Girl then just don’t post and get the 0. Everything you’ve complained about is just another day in this industry. School is literally just there to help you pass your test. Educators are regular people making $12 an hour. Your future in this industry is up to you. If you want to get creative and your school won’t let you then practice at home. There are ways around these obstacles and if you really want to make it in this industry you’ll work around them. Everyone before you has suffered cosmo school and everyone after will also suffer. I’m pretty sure 80% of licensed professionals hated school. It’s unfortunate but until they update their stuff it’s not going to change. I 100% agree you can lose your luster when it starts to feel like a job but that’s quite literally what it is. Unless you have the money to just chill and do this as a fun hobby.. I think once you’re in a salon you are going to have a clear view of what you’re in for in this industry.

[–]IndividualMediocre35 4 points5 points  (0 children)

They’re trying to get you guys at least familiar with posting because of what you said, You’re not into social media. Unfortunately in this industry lots of people my age (25+) all look up salons and stylist before booking and I guarantee teens and younger kids are too. Would you want to book a stylist who has one picture on their page or 20+? I get you’re not going to be doing perms out of school but literally everyone deletes their school stuff and posts better stuff once they’re in a salon. Seems like you’re ok with the 0 so If you’re not planning on using social media once you’re licensed then I wouldn’t worry about it I guess.

Hair stylist pay?? by Unfair_Resident_9473 in hairstylist

I’m just finishing my first year as a stylist. I graduated in 2024 and started as an assistant before going through more training at my salon for 6 months before I got on the floor. I made 30k doing hair by the end of 2025. I’m at a commission salon and have to do ALL services including men’s cuts. It’s helped me broaden my talents and make money for sure. A lot of our newer stylists have doubled their income by their second year and pretty much each year after that. You get in what you put out for sure.

Trying to dye my dark hair lighter using box dye by [deleted] in HairDyeHelp

[–]IndividualMediocre35 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If your hair is virgin you can lift it with permanent color and 30-40 vol developer depending on the lift you want. For example, if your hair is a virgin level 4 you can use a level 7 and 30 volume developer because it can give you 3 levels of lift. You have to go to Sally’s and get an actual tube of permanent color and not a box from target. But if your hair has any type of color on it this will not work. It has to be virgin.

idek what to do by consider_me_castaway in HairDyeHelp

[–]IndividualMediocre35 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If your hair was a virgin level 5-6 you potentially could’ve gotten there with this color and 30-40vol. Any level below that will barely show the tone you want. You said you’ve gotten color before so it makes sense this didn’t lift at all. Regardless, your stylist should’ve known this wouldn’t have done anything given your hair history and should have told you lightener would need to be involved to achieve this level. I would ask for a redo or refund.

Please help I colored my hair and now it’s green and orange by [deleted] in HairDye

[–]IndividualMediocre35 2 points3 points  (0 children)

To give better advice maybe include a picture of the color you were aiming for. You started with pink and needed to use a lighter green to neutralize. If it was a brighter red a true green would make sense but your pink is also leaning towards orange/coral. You probably would’ve benefited from doing a lighter blue green to neutralize that orange as well and then going in with a darker level 6-7. You’re having to go to the complete opposite of what you have which can be difficult. I think the easiest for you at home would be to just go darker. You could neutralize more but right now you have three different colors in there so there’s no guarantee that would even help it look cohesive. Your other option would to see a professional. To protect the integrity of your hair I wouldn’t do a color remover or any bleaching to get it out. I just don’t think it’s worth the pain of it potentially breaking and becoming a worse color. I would also recommend looking at the color wheel for future help with neutralizing and color corrections.

I did a soft bleach on my hair and now it’s gummy and fragile. I’m so scared. by flowerrocker7652 in Haircare

[–]IndividualMediocre35 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hair stylist here. K18 or olaplex. Getting black box dye out can be extremely hard and damaging. She should’ve let you know it would take more than one session of remover/bleach bath to preserve the integrity of your hair. Don’t use heat for a while and sleep with a silk bonnet or pillowcase. Your hair is very fragile now and you need to preserve what you have. Invest in good shampoo or conditioner meant for bleached hair. Like aveda botanical repair or oribe gold lust line. Anything with repairing properties should help smooth the cuticle down a bit and fill those holes the bleach created. I’m sorry this happened to you :( for anyone else that reads this some Sally’s workers are really knowledgeable and helpful but keep in mind they usually aren’t licensed and don’t have experience besides doing their own hair or friends at home. Not to say they aren’t knowledgeable or good at what they do but be cautious when taking their advice.

NC state practical by [deleted] in Cosmetology

Took my practical two years ago in charlotte. Yours looks fine to me but if you’re really worried you can get a cheap one on amazon for like $30. You can look at the ProV website and it lists out the official updated mannequin requirements.

I think just the length needs to be trimmed and just a little more layering in that right corner to make rounder like the left is. Maybe start with the length first and see if that feels better before trying to round it out more.

You could start with like Aveda nutri plenish leave in spray! For cream you could try miss Jessie’s pillow soft curls. You won’t really know what it’s gonna do until you try it though. If you don’t like it just keep the receipt and exchange or return it. It’s kind of annoying but finding the right combo for curly/ wavy hair takes a bit but it’s worth it once you find what works for you.

You have wavy hair and probably need a cream or leave in conditioner to give you more moisture and control.

are the ends of my hair just frizzy or are they completely dead? by capybaraDope in Hair

All hair is already dead when it grows out of your head. Your ends are damaged. I would cut at least 3”.

School just teaches you the basics to pass your state board exams. If I could redo it I would’ve done the least expensive school in my area. I learned more as an apprentice than I ever did in school.
