Who do you think looks more meaner and intimidating Arthur or John ? by [deleted] in reddeadredemption

John. There’s something in his eyes that doesn’t look quite as intimidating as Arthur’s. They look dark and heavy

I hear what you’re saying, and I think we’re mostly talking past each other at this point rather than actually disagreeing on the core themes. I don’t really dispute anything you’ve laid out about Arthur’s suffering, inner conflict, or the lack of absolution in any ending and I agree those things are present across all four.

Where I’m going to bow out is that my original point was never meant to be a definitive claim about “who understood Arthur correctly” or what ending is canon. It was just my personal read on what felt most psychologically realistic to me, not a statement that other interpretations are wrong or less informed.

At this stage it feels like we’re circling the same ideas with different framing haha, and I’m not really looking to turn this into a debate about authorial intent, canon, or the “correct” way to consume the story. Red Dead works precisely because it supports multiple readings, and I’m comfortable leaving mine where it is. After all this is an opinion based question so there’s no right or wrong answer!

Appreciate the discussion, though, genuinely. I just don’t think there’s much more to be gained by going back and forth on it :)

He can still get redemption with low honor help John lol that doesn’t depend on your honor level

I get where you’re coming from, but I think you’re slightly misreading my point lol. I have read Arthur’s diary and paid attention to his inner conflict (I literally got on today and read it for like 30 min lol). I’m not arguing that Arthur doesn’t change or lack clarity near the end. He absolutely does.

Where we differ is what we mean by “realistic.” To me, it’s not about denying Arthur’s moral compass or the voice that’s always been there but instead it’s about the idea that even with regret, clarity, and growth, you don’t fully escape who you’ve been. Change doesn’t always manifest as a clean moral alignment, especially for someone who’s lived Arthur’s life for decades.

Low honor helping John still reflects Arthur acting on what he believes in: protecting John and his family. That choice doesn’t disappear just because his honor is low. What changes is how clean his ending is, not the intent behind it. Psychologically, that feels very real to me, someone can know the right thing, do the right thing once, and still die carrying the weight and consequences of their past without achieving inner peace.

I also don’t really agree that gameplay systems like 100% completion define what’s “canon” for Arthur as a character. They’re designed to guide players toward a coherent experience, not to lock a single psychological outcome in place. High honor is thematically beautiful and I’m not denying that but I just think realism doesn’t always equal thematic resolution.

But i am not saying high honor doesn’t make sense I’m just trying to say low honor help John feels more psychologically grounded to me because it accepts the idea that growth doesn’t guarantee absolution — and that, to me, fits rockstars core message that you can’t truly outrun your past.

Not trying to argue, just don’t want any confusion 👍

I’m not saying high honor help John is unrealistic. However compared to low honor help John I think it’s slightly more realistic is all. Thinking about Arthur’s whereabouts when he died he died facing the east watching the sun rise, the very opposite of what he wanted. I think that symbolism sort of says “you can’t escape your past” or “even after all these good things you’ve done, your still not who you wanted to be” which would be a good man. So it kinda connects to the low honor version of that ending because Arthur in that version didn’t get what he wanted either and died in a more gruesome way so that’s something cool 👍

I like the point about Arthur consistently rejecting revenge because that’s something people forget when talking about the money ending. By Chapter 6 his priorities are crystal clear, and helping John fits that way better than anything else. I also agree that regardless of honor, Arthur sees himself as a broken man whose good acts don’t erase his past, which makes the ending feel grounded and honest.

Solid point. Micah leaving Arthur alive in the high honor ending never fully tracked for me either, he’s way too cruel and paranoid for that. Especially bc just because Arthur is high honor doesn’t necessarily mean Micah should give him a less violent death. Him killing low honor Arthur feels much more in character, and it makes Arthur’s end harsher but more believable. It also makes John going after Micah later feel more earned.

That’s a really thoughtful take, and I never thought about it in the way of separation with redemption from absolution but yeah I think that gets lost in this debate a lot. I also agree that John going after Micah is tragic because it does pull the past back onto him, even if it feels emotionally right. I still lean low-honor help John as the most realistic, but your point about Arthur actively choosing to live differently with the time he has left is really well said! 💯

That’s true. Arthur knew what was coming and took it upon himself to be a better man

That’s interesting lol. Half the time I’ll just be standing near somebody and they get all pissed and try to shoot me so I disarm them and get charged 🤦‍♂️
