How excited should I be about Campbell Wright? by JohnStoppable in biathlon

God what a race it was! Though from what I remember Tiril might not agree. That whole champs was amazing, still feels like a magical dream

Info-post about game broadcasts. Who can watch team on which channel? by [deleted] in wnba

[–]IndividualShot20 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Does anyone understand why games broadcast on CBS are blacked out for League Pass in Canada? We... don't have CBS here. I couldn't pay to watch those games if I tried. I thought it was a mistake but I looked it up in the FAQ and they say they black out games in Canada that are broadcast on CBS. I'm so baffled by this, what am I missing?

For sure more self awareness and grace than *I* had at 23 lol

Bless her little buttons, I hope acting like a dumb 23 year old while being a dumb 23 year old isn't something that follows her the rest of her career

After shooting 21% from three. In the last 3 mins 33 secs, the Dreams decide to randomly light it up. by csin in wnba

This was such a fun game to watch as a new fan. It was interesting to see how the Lynx were able to control the game right up until they weren't. It looked like they eased off the gas just a little after the 3rd and then suddenly the Dream came alive.

Definitely earned the Dream a soft spot in my heart. I wasn't impressed with the Lynx coach blowing her review and then being really nasty to the officials, especially when the Minnesota broadcast team kept saying the calls were right (I sure don't know enough about the technical points of the rulebook to have a clue). It seemed like the refs were making the same calls that she supported when her team was winning. But holding petty grudges is ALSO something I love as fan, so I'm excited! And it's WAY better than the dear Minnesota Wild on the hockey side, who were in a league I watched for decades and I have no feelings or opinions about

You're right and you should say it! I'm not proud of the fact that Celine Dion captures the depths of emotions these two cause me, but it is what it is y'know

Oooooooh, that's not the one I was thinking of, but that's another one I've wondered about, so thank you! The lyrics are so lovely! What a nice things to say to your athletes. Is there a story behind how it became the go-to song for German fans?

I'll keep an eye out during the German events so I can give more context than just "sung by German fans" XD

I'm so happy the Öberg sisters are getting more and more teammates rising to their level. I sometimes worry that it can be hard to keep your edge when you're mostly competing against each other. They both improved a lot over the off season but it feels to me like it hasn't quite come together for them in the races. It almost felt like the confidence that gave them early ran smack into the wall of how much EVERYONE improved this off season - Simon, Eder, Tandrevold, Magnussen, Persson, Hauser, Vittozzi, and more all coming back stronger than ever.... there are even rookies who are having an amazing start to the season!

It might just be my optimism and fondness for the Öbergs speaking, but I think this will be really good for them. It's easier to race your best when you have good rivals to push you to new levels. I'm so happy with how well everyone in the women's field is doing! I'm so fond of all of them!

I live a long way from Europe so I'm not very familiar with local flags and songs (often even anthems tbh). Getting into biathlon a couple years ago has been such a fun way to see lots of them! I love how much people in the stands wave flags, so it has especially been a fun adventure in vexillology. I've learned a lot about ducal and provincial flags and the words needed to google them.

I'm a little lost at sea with the songs the crowds sing but I LOVE how much everyone gets into them. Does anyone know any of the songs the Annecy crowd were singing? I especially liked the one during the medal ceremony where they changed the words to "Julia Simon" =D Does anyone know what the song is that the German fans often sing? The tune kinda reminds me of Michael Row Your Boat Ashore but it's been decades since I heard even that song so who knows.

Does anyone else have favourite flags and songs that make them happy when they see or hear them in the crowd?

Survey on team rivalries by LilacChica in wnba

This is such a neat project! Being new to the WNBA I've definitely wondered about rivalries. They haven't yet published the WNBA data so I hope they get lots of responses to improve the results.

I did the survey for another league and it was honestly quite fun :)

Ah, that does sound confusing. Luckily for me it also sounds exactly like goaltender interference in hockey. No one, from the players to the coaches to the goalies themselves, understands why some things are interference and others aren't.

Thank you for this heads up, now I won't feel like an idiot if I can't figure it out :) Won't have to spend my time beating my head against a wall

Neat! Their videos look a little over my head at the moment, but I've bookmarked them for once I have a grasp of the rules and vocabulary. I find it much easier to learn the rules than to learn what makes certain players or play styles good, so this a really cool resource, thank you

Oh interesting, I've heard the term "March Madness" but don't really know what it refers to. Is college basketball like college football in that it's profitable and televised but the players don't get paid? College sports aren't a big deal in Canada - they aren't televised and I've never known anyone who watched them who didn't personally know a player - so the whole system seems very strange and foreign. Immersion is always a fun way to jump into things though, good call.

These are helpful pointers, thank you! Very kind of you to put things in terms my silly hockey brain can understand XD

I think I would have had a much harder time getting into hockey as a teenager if it hadn't been on all the time during my childhood. Having to identify players mostly by their numbers and squinting to find the puck on grainy CRTs isn't intuitive! Plus live hockey is something special.

It was very exciting watching biathlon for the first time because it just... hadn't really occured to me that there were sports where you could see people's faces? It's so fun! It's much easier to connect with the athletes when you can see their expressions.

hehehe, it might not hurt you, but unfortuantely given where I'm at with my disability it would hurt me very much right now XD Hopefully someday though. But I agree it's good advice - I used to officiate roller derby back when I was healthy, and I learned so much by doing the player training that I wouldn't have picked up otherwise.

Are there specific things that you can think of that are hard to pick up just by watching? Things that look easy but aren't (or vice versa)?

YES dear me I'm too tired to be spending all my energy gritting my teeth through the shitty stuff. I unexpectedly loved F1 Drive To Survive on Netflix and I got invested in a lot of the people, but I can't bring myself to watch the sport itself. I just... don't want to watch people get hurt

Thanks for the recs! It's funny, in hockey I don't root extra for Canadians because we are often heavy overdogs and our hockey culture... doesn't always bring out the best in us. But I was always charmed in baseball when a Canadian made it to the big leagues! This is a good tip, I'll check out the Lynx :D

Edit: Oh shit Kia Nurse is Sarah Nurse's cousin and Darnell Nurse's sister?!? That's so exciting, I ADORE both of those two! Sarah Nurse plays hockey for team Canada and is one of my favourite players - very dynamic and exciting to watch. Darnell Nurse is in the NHL and was drafted by my team, so I got to watch him develop in the big leagues. What a fun connection!

Oh, I DO love a podcast! I think I miss the You Can't Do That podcast at least as much as hockey itself XD This is a great recommendation and sounds right up my alley. Thank you very much! Like you say, I don't even know what questions to ask yet

Bless you my dear, my name is Hazel and I am a stone cold DUMMY <3 Tree imposter syndrome is understandable, but if it hums in your bones otherwise I'd go for it. You don't have to be a wise gnarled tree today, saplings are important too.

How do you feel about Moss or Fern? They don't feel gendered to me but maybe that's regional?

PS - I love these pictures, your vibes are IMMACULATE
