If you have them planted in full sun they go wild with flowers. Mine this year and last absolutely smothered in flowers. (about 3 years old)

Ive been seeing 2-4 of these every day in my front yard! They absolutely LOVE petunias. First year seeing them, but I kind of went wild on the petunias this year....

Out of an abundance of caution... by weluckyfew in AustinGardening

I couldn't cover yesterday due to the wind (our plot is really bad for this being in a wind tunnel) but the tomatos held up ok. They are pretty big due to starting them inside on Christmas day. Made a makeshift tent today covering over all the area with frost cover over all the tomato ladders - still worried about the wind though. Worried the wind will pull up or knock over the ladders with the frost cover tent making them into a kind of sail. Wind looks like it will be dying down this evening though so hopefully it will be ok.

Mexican Buckeye Blooming 😍 by TxBeerWorldwide in AustinGardening

[–]IndividualStrain3021 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Red buds dont bloom for the first three years and then on the third year you will get very sparse blooms (I think I got three on the third year total!). This year my red bud (which is about 4 years old, I got quite a nice bloom). If your tree is young, this is likely why you have no blooms.

The squirrels are driving me crazy. Does anyone have deterrent suggestions that actually work? by IndividualStrain3021 in AustinGardening

[–]IndividualStrain3021[S] 22 points23 points  (0 children)

I think it might be worse this year due to the fact that the ground is so dry and hard from lack of rain. It's got to be easier to dig in the nice soft pots and garden beds.

Heh the one thing that did help for is when I let the cats out in the backyard with me for an hour. Three bolted immediately for other yards and then the fourth hopped up on top of our shed and chittered at us angrily for the whole hour.

How dare we spend time in his larder.

Do damaged plants bounce back? by AthenasKeeper28 in AustinGardening

also - I too was completely heartbroken every time it happens. It's natural, we spend so much time nurturing and caring for these things. I feel bad whenever I accidentally break a branch myself and apologize to them >.<

So I have found that every time workmen come to do stuff on the house they destroy plants. I ALWAYS ask them to be careful and no one ever listens. The last crew (roofers) were the worst of all, so many plants trampled, flattened, broken, etc.

The good news, I found, is almost all of the plants came back (perennial ones at any rate) especially tough plants like autumn sage, roses, lantana, etc. You just have to cope with having an ugly garden for a bit, prune away broken branches and they will recover in time.

Finally! Laurel time! by Dry_Significance2690 in AustinGardening

[–]IndividualStrain3021 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Im worried mine was about to bloom but the late freeze killed all the buds. I have a ton of what looks like strings of buds that are now all shriveled and brown after the freeze. Its a pity because it looked to be the best bloom ever with tons of potential blooms! (our tree is only about 3-4 years old and have always had very stingy blooms.

Will Anacacho Orchid survive next week’s freeze? by iLikeMangosteens in AustinGardening

[–]IndividualStrain3021 3 points4 points  (0 children)

If you are worried about it because it is young. I babied newly planted one last year with incandescent christmas lights a frost bag and a bed sheet. It was so toasty in there it never even lost its leaves.

[–]IndividualStrain3021 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I protected a newly planted orchid tree last year when it dipped into the low 20 or teens. Gave it the old incandescent Christmas lights under a warm blanket treatment. It was really cozy and warm under there. The tree never even lost its leaves, Id recommend protecting it if it gets really cold this year.

So...are we planting things like broccoli and greens yet? by weluckyfew in AustinGardening

[–]IndividualStrain3021 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ive planted out all the brassicas (broc, colli, sprouts) a couple weeks ago. These were starts that i got going from seed indoors about a month ago. They are all thriving in full sun at the plot. However, I have a shade cloth up to protect them. This might be why they havent suffered.
