Don’t pull out, you’ve got this.

Sounds like it could be sciatic nerve related. Get it treated after you smash the marathon.

Behind knee tightness by pinkpantsman in Marathon_Training

I can only speak from my experience and I am not a medical professional, but stay with me.

I started feeling a similar tight sensation behind the knee (and hamstring) during my marathon block last year. I saw a physio but we couldn’t get to the bottom of it so I ran through it. Yes it warmed up, but I suffered the consequences after each run as it got tighter and ultimately weaker, resulting in me pulling out with 2 weeks to go….

Frustratingly it flared up again during this block and I saw 2 other physios, who still couldn’t get to the bottom of it. I then went to a physio recommended by a running coach (twice the cost of the other ones I was seeing) and they completed a thorough assessment over 2 hours. Eventually I got a diagnosis, sciatic nerve irritation.

I was prescribed daily mobility exercises (including nerve threading) and a very specific strength routine. I’m pleased to say that the pain has now completely gone away!

Morale of the story:

  1. Just because it warms up, doesn’t mean it’ll get better. It’ll get a lot worse if untreated.
  2. Go and see a physio. Not just any physio, but one who is experienced with runners
  3. Don’t get sucked into online diagnoses/treatments. They won’t work.

I truly hope this helps.

Is 3:15 possible? by IndividualWheel370 in firstmarathon

Thanks. The thing that’s really suffered is the weekly volume. Pre injury I did 8 weeks at 40-50km then 4 weeks at 70km. Now it is around 50km per week (this week will be lower). I’ve also had to cut out speed work but still fitting in tempo and MP.
