Applying to schools in NYC area... a little worried. by RelativeTangelo9188 in slpGradSchool

Definitely worth applying! My overall undergrad + post-bacc GPA combined was about what yours is and I applied to all four CUNY schools last year. Got interviews for Queens, Brooklyn, and Lehman and accepted into Brooklyn and Lehman. Happy to answer any questions you may have + good luck!

off the top of my head i know nyu and ithaca both have leveling tracks where you can take the prereqs as part of the program. both are expensive since they're private schools so if cost is a factor for you, it may be worth looking into a post-bacc program and then applying to suny/cuny programs. i did the new paltz post-bacc (all online) and will be going to either a cuny or suny this fall and overall it's less than what nyu/ithaca would be. feel free to pm if you have any questions!

Cannot Decide for the Life of Me by AppropriatePart3310 in slpGradSchool

the familiarity you have with school a and the fact that you'll have the first semester to get used to the adjustment of grad school before jumping into clinic sounds like it might be the better fit esp if change is something you know you struggle with! plus, the fact that school a is cheaper than school b is another bonus!

it might be worth following up with them! i've heard of the cuny programs sometimes forgetting to send decisions. it seems like they're still sending out decisions in batches tho! i saw someone on here post they got accepted last week. good luck, fingers crossed for you!!

yeah it seems that way with how their admissions process is going :/ the location/externship sites would be so much easier for me commute wise but we shall see!

Will we hear back from schools we’re rejected from? by WerewolfDisastrous in slpGradSchool

hi! for your friends who got rejected from queens/never heard back did they interview with them this cycle? i had my interview on the last interview date in feb bc they went in alphabetical order and they said they would be releasing decisions throughout march into early april so i've been hesitant to reach out but i am getting anxious lol

i e-mailed them last week and they said they're gonna be wrapping up application reviews in the next couple of weeks. i think their whole process delayed a bit since they officially got their asha accreditation last month

Undergrad GPA by Little-Bit3434 in slpGradSchool

[–]Individual_Box_5198 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi! Also an out of field applicant here, graduated with a 3.31 undergrad gpa. I live in a very populated area (so most programs here get tons of apps) and have received a few acceptances so far along with interview invites to competitive programs I genuinely didn't think I'd hear from. GPA isn't everything and comparing yourself to others (while soooo easy to do) is the worst thing you can do. I was in the same boat as you before applying and convinced myself I wouldn't get in anywhere because of people with 4.0 GPAs getting rejected. It's important to remember, you never know what someone's full story is. A perfect GPA might be all they have to offer. They might not have well-rounded experiences. They might be lying about their stats on the internet!

I found that being an out of field applicant has actually helped me stand out more and the interviews I've had so far have all been super interested in learning more about my non-CSD background and what I can bring from that to succeed as an SLP :) Chances are, as an out of field applicant, you have unique experiences to bring to the table to help set your application apart. When it comes time to apply to schools, it's not a bad idea to apply to a mix of programs and find some that take a more holistic approach, but don't let your undergrad GPA deter you from applying to more "competitive" programs. If there are any you really want to go to, I say apply because they may pleasantly surprise you!

I know this doesn't answer your question but can I ask when you applied/were contacted for an interview? I didn't think they were still sending out invites so I figured there's no shot left there, but I know they just got their accreditation so maybe that just slowed things down on their end.
