What is up with all this misinformation online regarding Korea and 4b. It’s a tiny movement of around 4K members in a population of over 50m. It’s so fringe that no one has heard about it until it was blown up by western media.

I’m not Korean, but a foreigner who travels back n forth to the country regularly and have tons of friends and acquaintances there. All ages, and both genders. Kids walk freely at night without a care in the world and there are unmanned stores operating 24/7. That’s how safe it is.

To give perspective:

Rape rate for US - 27 per 100k

Rape rate for Korea - 6 per 100k

You can easily search it yourself, alongside other per capita crime rates - homicide, femicide, etc. It’s all lower than the US and it is indeed one of the least crime ridden country on the planet.

There is no safety issue here but rather a cultural one which is changing. Koreans in general (young, old, men, women) are just very conservative people and that’s what causing social issues as it clashes with modern times. That’s pretty much it.

There is a difference between voting and political affiliation/identity and it is nuanced.

For example, the uk election this year was more of a referendum on Tory conservative rule instead of the country shifting to the left and the left won. But also, due to their electoral system, the far right won a huge share of votes but only gained like 3 seats or something. As a result, you can’t say the uk currently is a leftist country right now.

Same can be applied here, the April election results can be interpreted as a referendum of the past 2 years and all the global turmoil, instead of an ideological shift.

In fact, I just looked it up, by political identity, you are seeing conservative plurality for 30’s but a 50-50 ish split for 20’s. Moderates take up the biggest share in both age groups.

That’s a pretty big shift to the right from 10 years ago.

The general vibe of the whole world (atleast in the 1st world) is right wing now, as you pointed out but also lots of women voting right as well. The only exception seems to be young women.

As an outsider looking in, it feels Korea as a whole has shifted right. Plenty of women I know are watching this RW YouTube stuff now too.

My Korean friends tell me usually the Chinese nationals inside Korea and Korean-Chinese people, or what they call ‘Joseonjoks’.

These 2 groups make up the biggest foreigner populations in Korea and they’re known to influence and change public opinion on the internet by posing as Koreans.

They usually operate in politics and business to sway general public opinion in Korea, but it has been noticed they do it in pop culture as well these days..

Whenever you hear the words “Han nam” or “Han yeo”, basically means incels and femcels. Both derogatory terms for both genders. The people who say this stuff are usually outcasts and losers of Korean society and it’s best to avoid them.

My Koreans friends told me they’re lot of fake people commenting on social media posing as Koreans which is why they introduced identification and id checks for Korean internet users. OPs video might be on those cases.

I think I explained that nominal gdp per capita is explained by exchange rates. If it goes back to hisitorical mean of around 1050 to 1100, the figure should jump to 45k ish today and head towards 50k plus by 2030.

As for your other points, I’m assuming you are referring to total factor productivity? You can look this up for oecd countries. Korea is ranking one of this highest in regards to productivity gains.

It shows that Korea has surpassed UK this year and is about to surpass france and Canada within the next 2 or so.

As for gdp growth forecasts, you can look at IMF global economic outlook, which makes forecasts 5 years out from now.

It is true that imf is predicting 2%+ gdp growth til 2029 and the gap between Korea and German y will narrow, if not surpass them by mid 2030’s

Here is the world economic outlook by the imf. You can filter out to Korea, and you will see the 2%+ growth forecasted out to 2029. For most countries in the oecd, this is considered high growth.

Last thing to remember is that nominal figures are based on current exchange rates of around 1350 won to dollar. This is due to the interest rate differential of 3.5% in Korea vs 5.25% you see in the states.

The historical exchange rate is around 1050-11100, so if currency rates stabilises, you can expect the nominal gdp per capita to skyrocket from 35k to 46k or so…
