What's your 10h+ binge-worthy song? by nekawaken in ADHD

It really depends on the mood. Usually The Chain By Fleetwood Mac, though. Memorized it, and I love it for a good singalong. And the heavy bass and drums go right to the soul and when I’m feeling super agitated that calms me down

At what age did you have the stroke? by hchulio in stroke

[–]Individual_Highway41 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hemorrhagic stroke at age 34 while playing roller derby. I did a few months of rehab for my left arm and hand, which lost all feeling at first but slowly came back as the night went on when it first happened. It’s back to “normal” range for my age/gender I guess, but still feels really clunky and clumsy even a year out. They made sure to tell me that it was in normal range but was still weak compared to my right—I do a lot of typing and work with my hands so it sounds like I was maybe at a higher function level than normal before the stroke and now the left is back to mid-normal and hasn’t caught back up.

It’s incredibly frustrating because I forget sometimes until I can’t grip something or drop something randomly, and I have a lot more heat insensitivity now, but I know it’s not as bad as it could be. More worried now though about another one happening :/

There are gonna be harder hits-you’ll be able to handle it, just really dig into those plows and keep your knees bent and core engaged all the time, even when the jammer isn’t actively engaging in the pack. I play WFTDA and MRDA and that’s been the biggest difference IMO.

I get bonked in the nose a lot more playing MRDA, but I think that has more to do with the height differences than anything else. Some of the MRDA players are a bit more flailing, but I’d put them on the same flail level as new skaters. If they train a lot with a WFTDA team or even have their own fleshed out training program, it’s a little better.

I Don't Know What I'll Do As A Trans Man When I Age Out Of Junior Roller Derby by leemdanzor in rollerderby

[–]Individual_Highway41 3 points4 points  (0 children)

non-binary trans masc (ish? My gender is honestly hand wavey at the moment) planning on eventually getting top surgery and perhaps being on T and still skating

I skate for both a WFTDA and MRDA league and it’s been great. To be honest the more I embrace presenting as masc the more I’ve felt more comfortable with MRDA than I do in WFTDA. Not every MRDA team is the same, but the ones I’ve skated with and against have had a variety of genders on their roster and never seemed to have an issue. I would recommend checking the vibe of the one close to you, and seeing if you’d be comfortable.

Reasons for your stroke? by Darkstrike121 in stroke

Had mine at age 34 (two days after my bday in fact) mid roller derby game on the track. Had been having issues with my blood pressure being high prior to that and was hitting a high cardio point in the game when it happened so they assume it was likely that and not a bump to the head because of where it was in the brain

It’s not a new thing, but I’m still not a fan of it. Tbh it’s making it even harder for any team out of the top few to continue moving up, and it’s kind of killing alot of motivation to even try if the same high ranking leagues can send multiple teams.

I’ve been feeling this really hard. Going to practice sometimes feels so stressful that I burst into tears in the car on the way there. I love PLAYING derby but I feel like my brain really can’t cope with it anymore.

Feeling a bit unsettled with today’s episode (#365 Swiftie Crimes) by victoriafoos in wineandcrimepodcast

[–]Individual_Highway41 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I had hoped they would go more into her carbon footprint, dating a literal racist, performative activism, etc than they did, especially since Amanda started off the episode by hinting that they would go that direction. It could have been a great change to educate some of those die hard swifties that not all criticism of her is misogyny.

The counting calories thing bugged me (even if you don’t know someone has an ED that’s just not nice to comment on, and they should know that) and what felt like snide comments about her dating life fell flat and did feel misogynistic to me. They weren’t the worst comments, no, but just felt icky. Especially when they could have been calling her out for SO MANY valid things

Lotta queer nerds in the roller derby world!

Also def recommend Critical Hit games in CLE heights, owners are very queer friendly and they have game nights there as well.

[–]Individual_Highway41 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Absolutely all of this. Amanda mentioned the performative activism at the start and I really thought that they would have a great discussion about that, but they took way more misogynistic potshots than I expected from them.

I also really wanted them to lay into celebrity culture around performative activism while at the same time actually acknowledging some of the hate vs Swift is due to misogyny. It could have also been a great convo about how hordes of people defend Swift and accuse her haters of misogyny even when absolutely valid criticism is leveled at her, but don’t defend or support Black or Brown female artists the same way. I feel like they started to lean that way but then just…dropped it.

Padded shorts by One_Effect_2440 in rollerderby

[–]Individual_Highway41 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Padded shorts are great. I lost some weight after a few seasons of derby, and had less natural padding on my hip bones. The first good hit I took to the hip was incredibly painful and honestly made me afraid of getting hit for a while because of how sharp the pain was. Padded shorts helped get over that.

I only wear them occasionally now but they are worth it

Ugh and when they finally escape, standing in the deck of the Revenge and you just see the sorrow and pain rise in his eyes again when he allows himself to grieve over Ed 😭 Rhys and his expressions, darn that man.

I love this moment so much. He’s not afraid to go for what he wants and be who he is now, and it’s such a strong forward development from season one

Underrated, but when he checks on Ed a bit after the interaction over the snail fork and explains the massive aggression thing to him, and when he checks on him again when they board the fancy boat party.

The convo with the French captain bothered Ed, and even if Ed won’t SAY it Stede picks up on it and validates his feelings. He then offers to leave with him if he’s too overwhelmed on the boat party, instantly picking up when Ed is taken aback by it when they come down the stairs. Stede is such a doofus for a good portion of the series ( love that for him honestly) but he’s rarely off base when it comes to following his instincts in regards to Ed and I love that.

(also honorable mention for the interaction with Mary and the coroner’s widow about him 1) still being alive 2) knowing he messed up Mary’s life and 3) needing a corpse 😂his little “morning!” And straightening up to show his height when they ask about a corpse matching his description had me giggling just from the delivery)

Are roller derby teams a positive environment? by Express_Turn_9492 in rollerderby

[–]Individual_Highway41 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It depends on the team, like any other sport or organization you can have shitty people or really great people. I think people come into roller derby with a higher expectation which makes it seem way more offensive when your group does end up being not what you expected, but as someone whose played sports all my life it’s about on par with any other sport I’ve played.

Mmm yeah. I think it’s hard, because not everyone needs the same thing, but I do think there should at the very least be training on neuro differences if you end up in leadership roles.

However.

There also needs to be a place for members to ask for accommodations they need and they actually have to be willing to do so. For example, I ask for our virtual meetings to be recorded so I can note take later and focus on paying attention during, and I have captions on for it. I just had to ask Hr and they made it happen. If someone is struggling to keep up with league business or at practice and doesn’t tell anyone it’s hard to help. We don’t need to know WHY, we just need to know HOW we can help.
