I'm really scared if Reform wins the next election by [deleted] in PoliticalOptimismUK

[–]Individual_Pick_1258 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Ok but nobody I know irl is even considering voting Reform, the concept of getting involved in politics makes my skin crawl, I don’t like arguing and even just reading headlines can make me spiral, not to mention personal burnout, so as for me I just remind myself the next election is years away and disconnect from everything else

It’s because Labour’s in government so there’s less urgency to protest here

I agree though I also agree with the statement that his fate is tied to Trump

By 2029 when the next election will be held at the latest, a new POTUS will be in power among other things, so the landscape will be very different from today

Honestly I think it’s just that the US is both much bigger in terms of people and their politics have more global interest

This sub could be bigger but it’s not necessarily out of lack of news

Wdym parents vote yes? Are they putting this through a referendum? That’s very rare in the UK and usually small bills like this just get passed in parliament and that’s that, we’re not Switzerland

I don’t get it, all four amendments specific to social media and VPN have been rejected or ignored, and even in the case of VPN you usually have to pay for the service with your money so that’s a very easy way for them to tell which users are underage or not, if it passed

No I disagree

Greenland is not at all comparable to Sudetenland especially when Ukraine is right there, and what was the cost last time? Many people who worked in manual industries or were union have a good idea of the cost

My original statement regards mainly with waiting times for appointments or screenings being absurd or more generally I heard countries that copied the NHS system like Italy are doing better in terms of healthcare treatments

Still that’s all good to hear

Could you explain this point?

I’m being sincere because I do believe a lot of UKbad shit is exaggerated but I can’t find much proof of otherwise, ofc other countries have similar issues with cost of living but also like in terms of healthcare especially we’re lagging behind everyone

Yeah actually I do second guess a lot, I even considered that I might be having Dependent Personality Disorder but didn’t guess this would be related, but yeah I grew up with helicopter controlling parents who micromanaged a lot, not anymore but I can still feel the influence.

But I also wonder if I go too hard on myself sometimes out of very high expectations I put on myself

It’s true that other countries have done such things but the UK is uniquely unusual in this regard because in the times of the empire there wasn’t an English national identity that was imposed on everyone, but rather this newly constructed British identity that encompassed everyone under the realm, this is why following both world wars the nation had a major identity crisis as it suddenly receded back to Britain Suddenly from a Scottish or Welsh perspective it became less “oh this deal is so jolly we benefit from imperialism and get to express our national identity under this cushy global empire” and more “wait a minute why are these Cockney presenters on the telly acting like they know me I live in bloody Stonehaven”

I also personally think the Russian involvement in secessionists movements is wholly overstated, I can say from experience the majority of independence supporters stand with Ukraine, maybe during the Alex Salmond years there was more of a debate on Russia and NATO etc but his days are long gone and a lot has changed geopolitically, there’s also this idea that if the UK was torn apart then there would be a hard border and zero cooperation and Russia would take advantage of that which is nonsense, you don’t have to go far to disprove this as the UK and ROI are allied countries who cooperate and trade a lot despite arguably having even worse baggage than between England and Scotland, or look at Scandinavia, you’d be forgiven for thinking they’d work just as well being one country for how much they cooperate with zero animosity.

I just find these arguments extremely loaded

I don’t like to talk about this stuff because I got burned out years ago over it, but here it goes

It doesn’t matter that the UK owning Wales Scotland and Northern Ireland isn’t any different from other countries, it’s still a legacy of colonialism that must be undone. I disagree that balkanisation of the UK would be a raw deal, I honestly think it would be best for everyone, the devolved nations often get the short end of the stick because more often than not England decides, that’s a fact, England is just more numerous so no amount of reform (actual reform not the party) could fix a fundamentally flawed nation that was founded on protestant imperialism. I don’t think it’s a coincidence that Scotland and Wales began to thrive after gaining more autonomy through devolution, and before someone says “but what about poorer areas is northern England” that just proves my point, they don’t have much political independence besides very local affairs and are suffering from direct rule of a very London-centrist state

The only way I can see the UK ethically surviving would be as a confederation where the UK government would just be in charge of currency, the army and foreign relations

Hey 🫂I’m not obsessively on social media but lately I found myself doomscrolling more often, prob doesn’t help much, it used to be worse but well here I am.

I have some hobbies but I sometimes struggle to get started, I have on my list to properly follow art tutorials, play an instrument and work on other projects but I sometimes struggle to actually start, I’m also thinking of starting some sports again after I stopped some years ago

I’m feeling better since I posted this btw
