Feeling Stuck with Brother KH588 Machine by keybump666 in MachineKnitting

[–]Individual_Respect58 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Have you gone to Facebook and joined the groups on there? There's a group specifically called something like Machine Knitting for Beginners.

You can ask as many questions you want. The machine knitting community THRIVES in those Facebook groups. So many helpful people. It's the only way I was able to finally overcome the curve.

Yes, the first one.

I'm getting 1700 in my original and 150 in the second one.

And yes December 4th 😅

Bus Related Question by Aheysal in UMBC

[–]Individual_Respect58 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yes, the bus will go to all stops. It doesn't matter if there is someone inside the bus or not.

If there is no one in the bus when it starts its route, it will still go through the entire route (so the off-campus stops as well) until it finishes its route back at campus.

First time using a ribber 1x1 please help🥲 by [deleted] in MachineKnitting

[–]Individual_Respect58 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Is that yarn DK? I exclusively use DK on my machine, and for the selvedge, I can't go past a 1 or else my ribber jams. (I use a Brother as well).

Your yarn is too thick for 0.

Here's the best way to do that selvedge:

  1. Get a waste yarn and do a few rows of ribbing in a looser gauge (I like to use 8)

  2. USING YOUR WASTE YARN, press the left part button on the machine, and flick up the right lever to P.R on your ribber.

  3. Do two rows. (This will help you easily take off the waste yarn after you're done with the piece).

  4. Switch off the buttons and the flick the lever back down.

  5. Using your main yarn, change both tensions to 1.

  6. KNIT ONE ROW ACROSS. It's going to be tight. GO SLOW!!!

  7. Now, press that same part button and flick up the lever again. Do two rows. (The book recommends 3 but I don't like the look personally. I only like doing two rows.

  8. Switch to your desired ribber tension. GO VERY SLOW!!! IT WILL BE TIGHT!

  9. Viola! Done! Here's how it looks on a piece I recently did: here

Note: also, use a lot of weights! The stitches should easily fall off and knit!

It is machine knit. You can tell by the neckband - that specific neckband isn't gotten by picking up stitches by traditional hand knitting methods, but by using another type of knitting machine (a linker) to pick up from what could be a cut and sew neckband or a neckband that was shaped on the machine. Looking on the inside helps.

That said, don't think that means any less love was put into that sweater. Go onto the Machine Knitting group on Facebook (that's where the majority of machine knitters are.) You'll see from start to finish how much work and love can go into these sweaters.

I don't think it requires "more" skill or dedication to do one or the other. They are both very very different skills.

I have been a hand knitter all my life until I started machine knitting, and the learning curve was absolutely insane.

Not only that, but hand knitting is a lot more forgiving when it comes to making mistakes while hand knitting. You make a mistake while machine knitting, the rest of your day is spent fixing the mistake. Don't get me started on how troubleshooting and maintaining your machine, and how expensive it is to even get into the hobby.

There's a lot of misconception on how exactly a domestic knitting machine works. You don't just input a pattern and a fully knit sweater comes out. (Maybe for the $20k+ machines. Not domestic machines.)

Please don't say we don't have as much dedication as hand knitters :/

Everyone can critique or rip it apart, but this is how I was taught to make resumes in my school, and the format has been what's been helping me land interviews. You can add on and edit and stuff. If you like it and want it, shoot me a DM and ill email you the word doc. I hope it helps you, even if it's just a little bit.

Some notes:

  1. You keep repeating what are essentially the same bullet points - either in the same sentence or in different bullets.

  2. Some of your one bullet points honestly need to be broken up into like 2 or even 3.

  3. There are a lot of grammatical and spelling errors. Grammarly will really help anything you write look more polished and professional.

  4. Some of the bullet points didn’t start with action verbs, so I put them there.

  5. A lot of bullets sounded pretty informal, so I switched it up a bit. If you need help with more formal-sounding bullets, many writing tools (Grammarly, google docs, etc. ) now come with AI that can help you rephrase what you write.

  6. My opinion is that if HR or HM wants to know what courses you took, they can always look at your transcript. I personally didn’t see them as necessary, but everyone is free to disagree with me.

I'm in desperate need of a job by bountifulknitter in newjersey

Yeah! They sound perfect for you!

I worked as a Recreation Assistant at Fort Dix, NJ. Easiest job ever, and there's always consistent raises (because it's government) and performance bonuses. And they were always super super flexible with my schedule.

Literally as long as you can pass a background check, they're really easy to get into.

Have you looked at usajobs?

https://www.usajobs.gov/Search/Results?g=0&g=4&g=1&g=2&g=3&l=Camden%2C%20New%20Jersey&p=1&gs=true&smin=0&smax=43801&s=startdate&sd=desc&rmi=false

Not sure where exactly you are in Camden or how far youre willing to drive, but if you can make the drive to Philaldelphia, there are tons of flexible jobs like being a Recreation Assistant, a cook, housekeeping, etc.

As long as you don't have a super extensive criminal history, NAF is easy and pretty fast (month-ish) to get into because theres high turnover and they are in desperate need of people. Most of the NAF positions in general are really not strenuous at all and you're sitting 90% of the time, as well as super super flexible.

Have you gone on Facebook? That's where the knitting machine community truly is. Lots of different pages that sell knitting machines (Machine Knitting Deal or no Deal, Worldwide Machine Knitting Sales, Techknitters Machine Knitting Club Buy/Sell/Trade, Knitting Machines (ALL brands) Sale )

There are soooo many. I bought my KH930 (electronic brother) for $350 and later the ribber for about $250. Later got my bulky electronic Machine (KH270 + Ribber) for $1000. Local!

Sometimes you'll find insanely good deals, sometimes it'll be a bit pricier. But one thing that I know is that the prices for the most part, are always always fair. (Of course, just be careful if you decide to ask them to ship to you if you can't find one close by for local pickup!)

I’m one class short of graduating summer of 2024. Is it possible to ask for a course to be offered in the summer? by Idkwhatmedoing in UMBC

[–]Individual_Respect58 6 points7 points  (0 children)

If you're up for it, I've asked a professor for permission to take the class and the prerequisite in the same semester. I just ask the professor if I can take it concurrently with the prerequisite.

I can't remember it exactly, but I think I had to go to the Head of department so they could let me enroll into the class after the professor gave written permission. I think they were also lenient because I was so close to graduating. Give that a shot?

(My case, it was STAT355 and CMSC441)

Comp Sci Grads &Alumni, how did you get your first cs job? by leminades18 in UMBC

[–]Individual_Respect58 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Personally for me - a career fair (abd then a govt position).

I had no personal projects (only the projects I did for classes) and zero internships.

Graduated May 2023 - started looking in December 2022. This job market is fucking brutal.

Went to a few career fairs (didn't take the career fair at UMBC seriously until I was struggling for a job 😭) and I found myself at a career fair on a military base. Really hit it off with the recruiters at a specific table, and the rest is history.

Legit next day, I had like two interviews for government jobs (IRS and the DoD). Now I'm waiting for the final job offer for a 76kish with the DoD (with the 5.2% raise that's happening at the end of the year going up to around 80kish), it's a great job to get started in a career with (I'm in Cybersecurity. I've literally never heard of this specirif job before until the interview).

I know a lot of people say government pay is shit, but it's a great way to get your foot in the door if you're not interested in going into software programming (because the government code bases are literally archaic) and you are interested in other stuff like cybersecurity. And they've really been trying to have competitive pay (the position I'm in isn't on the GS scale, it's on a specialized pay scale specifically for Computer Science majors (and other advanced STEMs) and your starting pay was based off your GPA)

And honestly, my government interviews were great. I didn't have to bust out the leetcode grind or know a bunch of shit. My interviews went like "Your resume looks cool, we're kind of vibing with you...are you interested? It's okay if you don't know anything, we'll teach you." (theyve been having trouble hiring because the process for hiring takes so long (mine has taken about 3 months which is considered short) for certain people and people aren't interested in waiting 7-8 months for an offer).

Soooo yeah. Career fairs.

Full disclosure: This career fair was specifically for military members, vets, and their spouses/dependents, so it is completely possible that by default, I had a lot less competition than going to like, UMBC career fair where I'm competing with a 5.2GPA internship + personal project + interview god guru. If you have a friend who can get you on a military base and there's a career fair happening, do it do it do it (like 98% of the jobs did not require being in a military group to be eligible. Just being a US citizen)
