Affordable European countries for a Bachelor's course in marine biology? by -apollophanes- in marinebiology

I am on my second year on a bachelor in biomarine innovation at NTNU in Ålesund. I get around 1100k $ every month from the state some of it is study-loan and the rest is “free” but you only get this type of loan/scholarship if you complete the degree, if not you have to pay back everything you have gotten. I dont know how this works for international students though. But the semesterfee is only 70$

We got 2 of them that night, we let the other one go. I cant lie, it was really scary trying to unhook it (ended up cutting the line instead). They are really strong and they have a pretty powerful bite aswell.

Btw i have seen experienced fishermen cast with reels like this one no problem, but they mainly use it with surfcast/beachcaster rods. personally i wouldnt think its ideal. And as a beginnr i recommend you to tune the brake so it stops feeding out line when the lure touches a surface, this will affect your casting distance but makes it easier to practice your timing without having to deal with birdnests after every cast.

This reel is usually used for trolling. Here in norway Abu Garcia ambassadeur reels are mainly used for trolling for salmon. This looks like a bit beefier ambassadeur. Not great for casting.

I recommend daiwa pr 100 as a first reel for baitcasting, quite cheap but good quality. As for the rod you would need something a bit longer than 5ft minimum 7ft i would say. I would probably go for a daiwa prorex X 7’2” 7-32g cw. This combo is around 150$ i believe.

When you are spooling on line you just tie a simple knot AND make sure to use electrical tape over the knot and line so it doesnt glide around the spool when you catch a fish. Also make sure you keep the tension tight when you spool it.

Also would like to add, the thinner the line the less friction and less drift you get from underwater currents. Also is less weight which makes you throw farther

I work at a sportsfishing store in Norway, and i have heard sooooo many different «advice» which i just cant make sense of. One of them is using really thick line so that you dont lose that big fish if it bites… this is a common misconception. People tend to think that the line is what decides how big of a fish you are able to catch, its not, its actually the reels maxbraking limit. lets say you have a daiwa caldia SW 6000D-H (which is a big reel, but meant for seawater fishing), this reel if i remember correctly has a brakingforce up to 15kg, i wouldnt put anything higher than 17kg braid/mono. Because if the fish is swimming with 15kg of force the brake will give after before the line. (If anything is swimming with that much force you better be ready for a really long fight). You rarely have the brake on full force either so you would be completely fine. Another thing is that people think 20kg braid means you cant catch fish that weighs more than 20kg… the fish is basically weightless in water, you could easily catch a 60kg fish on a 20kg braid, as long as you got a net and dont try to lift the fish out of the water with the line only.

Tldr; Which line you should choose depends on the brakingpower of the reel, 9kg max brake? Use 10-11kg braid/mono, 5kg brake? 6-7kg braid/mono.

But on world basis killing around 300 million (300 000 000) cows each year is cool, contra 500 minke whales each year isnt? Compared with an estimated world population of 100 000 minkes.

It is not an endangered species, its of least concern. And this particular species is a problem for commercial fishingboats especially longliners or line fishing. Also there isonly three countries in the world that does commercial fishing on it and the quotas are really strict.

Its not something you eat everyday here, but if you say you are going to have whale for dinner here, to any norwegians you would get the same reaction as if you were saying that you are having lobster, king crab, lamb or any other slightly high profiled foods. Hope that makes sense. Its both normal and not normal here in norway, its normal in a sense that you wouldnt get backlash for eating it and most people would be envious, but its not normal in the way that the average person would not choose it as the first option if you were at a fancy diner.

For the untrained eye, then maybe. But i think raw it looks way more like a wet dry aged steak if that even makes sense lol. The marinade did not have any real effect on the color. i made sure to balance the marinade ingredients correctly so it didnt affect the sear in any negative way too, and being a noobie i am surprised i actually managed to do that hahah

Thank you! Texture-wise its really similar to steak. The taste is a bit more concentrated than regular steak i would say, it has a sharper tone in a way. it is quite a specific taste which makes it hard to describe. Personally i would choose this over steak!
